Carlos Silva trade

No, it's not.

Look at his career. He's a .500 pitcher sporting a 4.68 ERA. He's thrown over 1,200 innings at the Major League level, and walks very few guys per 9 IP (1.7 per nine in his career).

There would be a lot of teams that would like that type of production out of their 5 guy, the Cubs included.

Well this is why you can't just look at his career numbers, you need to look a little closer.

From 2002-'05 Silva was a good four even a solid third option.
31-17 3.91 ERA 113 ERA+

From that point on, including last season he is:
39-53 5.37 ERA 79.4 ERA+

An ERA of 100+ means you're average, a five year ERA+ of 79.4 means you are terrible.

Plus, he's going to be 32 soon, his weight is listed at 250, and he had a heart issue last year. The Cubs owe him $6 million this year (Seattle pays him $5.5M) and there's a mutual buyout next year at $2M (for a salary of $12M). Yikes!

Cubs pick Wells and Cashner as 4 and 5 starters. Good choices as Wells had a great spring and Cashner is a future top of the rotation guy. Silva says he won't play AAA, so he will have to be traded.

or released outright.

I say send him to triple A and he can quit, that way the cubs don't have to pay his salary. If he doesn't like it tough. I think he gets traded because he has some value and he has to be better than someone's 5th starter.

Cubs released him. I think he'll get picked up. If someone signs him are the cubs still on the hook for his salary, or just he difference?

Chicago Cubs release Carlos Silva, voice displeasure with pitcher's parting shots - ESPN Chicago

This is great, and it is why I love Mike Quade.

Also, to clear up, if Silva signs with another team the Cubs have to pay the difference of what he was to make with them, and what the other club pays him. In other words it would be a really cheap one year arm for someone, and Silva still gets paid. Kind of dumb that if you suck you still get paid, but that is pro sports.

Love in the article that the cubs would trade him for nothing, and pay most of the salary and still no takers. Yet silva still thinks he deserves to be in the rotation.
