Canzeri capsule: Hidden nugget of gold?

Nice wrap-up by Jon on Jordan Canzeri. Of this year's recruits, he is the one that excites me the most. Seems to read the field and holes well. Good speed. Hard to tell whether he follows his blockers well because most of the time he's through the hole and on his way for 6. I am curious to see how he'll do taking the hits in the B1G and staying on his feet.

His commit video was my favorite by far and I loved watching it again. The punt return at 1:23 is just sick. Catches the ball, circles about 4 yards into the end zone, heads down the left sideline, eludes a tackle and stays on his feet at around the 20, cuts across the field and takes it the length of the field.

Welcome to Iowa, Jordan! Can't wait to see you in Black and Gold.

Also, just read the very detailed behind the scenes account of Canzeri's recruitment and the reasons behind his decision on HawkeyeInsider that Jon links in his capsule. If you haven't, you should. Make you even more proud to be a Hawkeye (and also to realize that what is said on these message boards is read and does matter to recruits and their parents.)

Jordan is one of the recruits I am looking forward to in the coming years. The post by "GamblingDan" was great on HawkeyeInsider. He originally was asking for information on Insider that could be used to compare Iowa to UConn and Villanova. It was awesome seeing someone take an active role making sure the recruit got all of the necessary information for the recruit to make a very important decision. It was also cool seeing so many fans helping as much as possible that he got the information he needed.

I can't wait to see what Jordan can do when he gets the ball in his hands.

What impresses me even more about all the 2011 recruits, is the quality of young men they are. All of these kids are solid in the interviews, seem to really have their heads on straight. I see lots of potential leadership in our underclassmen. That's a strong foundation for years to come.

Marcus Coker is a terrific model for incoming players...and we appear to be getting more like him.

Canzeri seems to have his head on straight, and that's with all the Tweeting and radio shows and stuff he does. Hopefully all these guys stay on the straight and narrow.

I really hope he gets a shot at special teams, and does well, because I can see him being a threat on returns. He's fast, agile and more importantly, seems to be able to survey the field well (like Micah Hyde on his two pick sixes). With good blocks by an improved special teams, we could have a weapon to help complement a still young offense (relatively young and inexperienced OL, QB and RB) as well as a relatively inexperienced defense ('new' safeties and DLmen).

After watching his video...reminds me of Dolph's quote on one of Tim Dwight's punt return TD's: "It's El Nino in a football jersey!"

When the projected OL next year has players that have all made Big 10 starts, I wouldn't call that inexperienced at all. That's the one part of our team most of us agree we will be solid at worst.

As for Canzeri, he is fast and would love to see him on punt/kickoff returns. Maybe an end around or something? Have to get your play makers the ball if he turns into one.

Jordan definitely reminds me of TD. I was even more impressed with the 0-Line he was running behind. The majority of time the defense doesn't even a touch him until he is 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. (excellent blocking)

We have any schollies left? ;)

There was one of those long returns he looked like he was getting winded and slowed down significantly. Maybe it was late in the game, or maybe he knew no one was even close to him. Hopefully he won't need a year under Doyle to be game ready.

Also looks like he'll need to be coached not to reverse field. Worked well in high school, but that won't fly at Iowa and he'll lose major yardage doing that.

Yep. Never worked very well for us, did it?

(I will acknowledge this was on defense...)

I actually agree that he needs to be coached not to reverse the field. If you didn't notice, both of those plays were off of interceptions. The offensive players pursuing hyde probably aren't as good at taking angles as players on defense. Definately not taking anything away from Canzeri though...looks a lot like Tim Dwight imo.:D

Tavian Banks was a guy with the speed and agility who could make something out of a reversal. I remember watching him v. Illinois where he went from one side to the other and scored a TD.

not comparing this kid to Tavian, but if you have the speed.......

I did notice and posted this note below the second video:

I agree that the coaches will work with him on running north-south. I'm also hopeful that what we're seeing on the video is largely due to pure talent and not just running through what looks like a really good offensive line.
