Can't wait for Fran to run UW and Brust off the court

Ben had to do what he had to do. The coach that he committed to was fired, and he wanted to look around. I don't begrudge him at all for doing this. He is going to a school that has won several Big Ten titles in the past decade and 'leaving' a program that hasn't won a big ten regular season title since 1979.

Tough to blame him, and I just don't get how some people get so mad about stuff like this. This post is tame, so I am not ripping you. But the venom I have seen in some other posts and places is just mind blowing, given the kid never laced up his shoes for an official practice at Iowa

That is all.

GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this a serious comment? Our program is so far behind Wisky it isn't even funny. Hopefully by Brust's senior year Fran will have us rebuilt to the point where we can compete with Wisky...but run them off the court?

Jon-

I don't think anyone begrudges him for choosing to go to Wisconsin or choosing not to go to Iowa. I think the way he and his family handled themselves made him out to be a spoiled brat and the spawn of two more spoiled brats. There was never any venom directed towards Cody Larson for instance. I think Hawk fans are sophisticated enough to know how it works.

But when you throw the institution under the bus, accuse them of shady dealings, and have a temper tantrum over a conference not changing the rules for you, I think he is getting what he deserves from some Hawkeye fans.

That kind of entitled attitude doesn't play well in Iowa City and frankly, will not serve him well in life. I don't wish him ill will, but I understand why he will be booed loudly the first time he enters CHA, and if I were there, I would join in.

If that's what it's about, why commit to Iowa in the first place?

I just wonder what Brust liked about Lickliter that he doesn't like about McCaffery.

Basketball teams can be turned around in two years if the right players are recruited.

I don't wish him ill will either, but I certainly don't wish him or Wisky any success against Iowa. I will be doing my part to make CHA a hostile environment when Wisky comes to town.

I don't wish him ill will in life but I hope he sucks at basketball and never gets on the court. I know that sounds childish but I never want kids that have a connection going to a different school and beating us.

I guess I don't see what the deal is with how he and his family "handled" the situation. What did they do specifically to upset so many people? I haven't heard/seen of anything that they did to put Iowa in a negative light.

Am I missing something?

I've wondered the same thing, the coach that recruited him got fired so he went in another direction. Nothing unusual here.

A temper tantrum? He and his parents had Ben's (the spawn's) best interest in mind. What makes you think they would fight for the U of Iowa's best interest over their son?

I don't know what the big deal is he is wayyyy overrated on this board.

I think that Ben will probably be better suited to succeed individually somewhere other than Iowa, right now.

I look at Matt Gatens..the year he had last year is not something I would have anticipated him from a shooting standpoint. Without consistent penetration from the perimeter, guys like him are going to get a lot of attention and have to shoot contested shots. That is what he faced. that's likely what he will face next year, too.

Until Iowa gets a compliment of guards that can attack the basket, that's his fate. I think the same would have been said for Brust, too.

yeah i can see that jon. I think athletic guards are more important than 3 point shooters right now thus why i'm not torn to pieces by brust's decision.

I trust in Fran when he says he will replace guys leaving with as good, if not better players. The big advanyage as I see it is that he gets to recruit guys that he wants for his style of play.

If we can snag Salter and get Andre Murphy to walk on, we will be in good shape at pg next year.

GO HAWKS!!!

But Jon, how was that any different than when he committed to play under Lickliter? The quick answer is, it's not. So if he had an issue w/ how bad Iowa is or how much he needed help from other guards he wouldn't have committed in the first place.

One of the big reason Ben committed to Iowa was that he was going to be an integral piece in helping Iowa get back to where they should be - that wouldn't have changed with the new staff, as the program isn't in any better shape (player-wise) than when Ben first committed.

Personally, I think Ben wanted to look for bigger and better things once Lickliter was let go. He knew with the season he had, he could find a "higher level' program to take him that was still close to home and was in the Big Ten. He went for it, and got it.

Sloooooow basketball. I don't think Brust would fit into a speed-up tempo with a pressing defense.

WI didn't have a scholarship available when he committed to Iowa did they?

I haven't talked to anyone who has a problem with Ben wanting to go elsewhere when we changed coaches. He has to do what is best for him. I think the problem comes in the WAY it was handled. Ben burned some bridges and so did his AAU coach. Iowa did everything they could for the kid. No one will convince me that Bo Ryan wasn't tampering, and I feel a little bitter about that.

Fran and Iowa did not run any players off, unlike some coaches and schools, so I think it stings a little that Brust took off when he got the chance. When Wisky took Vander Blue over him, Iowa was there to offer a full ride. Then Vander Blue dumps Wisky and there is Bo,courting Ben,thru back channels, maybe even before lick was fired. Nice. I think the rule in place in the league is a good one, to keep the Big Ten from descending into chaos like SEC football. Ben was able to get them to overrule it this once, but it will not be the last. I wish he had gone to DePaul or Marquette ..not looking forward to watching him play Iowa and on the BTN the next 4 years. If he turns out to be good, it will be worse, so I hope he is a benchwarmer and wisky is bad.
