GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is going to a school that has won several Big Ten titles in the past decade and 'leaving' a program that hasn't won a big ten regular season title since 1979.
Is this a serious comment? Our program is so far behind Wisky it isn't even funny. Hopefully by Brust's senior year Fran will have us rebuilt to the point where we can compete with Wisky...but run them off the court?
I guess I don't see what the deal is with how he and his family "handled" the situation. What did they do specifically to upset so many people? I haven't heard/seen of anything that they did to put Iowa in a negative light.
Am I missing something?
Jon-
I don't think anyone begrudges him for choosing to go to Wisconsin or choosing not to go to Iowa. I think the way he and his family handled themselves made him out to be a spoiled brat and the spawn of two more spoiled brats. There was never any venom directed towards Cody Larson for instance. I think Hawk fans are sophisticated enough to know how it works.
But when you throw the institution under the bus, accuse them of shady dealings, and have a temper tantrum over a conference not changing the rules for you, I think he is getting what he deserves from some Hawkeye fans.
That kind of entitled attitude doesn't play well in Iowa City and frankly, will not serve him well in life. I don't wish him ill will, but I understand why he will be booed loudly the first time he enters CHA, and if I were there, I would join in.
I don't know what the big deal is he is wayyyy overrated on this board.
I think that Ben will probably be better suited to succeed individually somewhere other than Iowa, right now.
I look at Matt Gatens..the year he had last year is not something I would have anticipated him from a shooting standpoint. Without consistent penetration from the perimeter, guys like him are going to get a lot of attention and have to shoot contested shots. That is what he faced. that's likely what he will face next year, too.
Until Iowa gets a compliment of guards that can attack the basket, that's his fate. I think the same would have been said for Brust, too.
If that's what it's about, why commit to Iowa in the first place?
I just wonder what Brust liked about Lickliter that he doesn't like about McCaffery.
But Jon, how was that any different than when he committed to play under Lickliter? The quick answer is, it's not. So if he had an issue w/ how bad Iowa is or how much he needed help from other guards he wouldn't have committed in the first place.
One of the big reason Ben committed to Iowa was that he was going to be an integral piece in helping Iowa get back to where they should be - that wouldn't have changed with the new staff, as the program isn't in any better shape (player-wise) than when Ben first committed.
Personally, I think Ben wanted to look for bigger and better things once Lickliter was let go. He knew with the season he had, he could find a "higher level' program to take him that was still close to home and was in the Big Ten. He went for it, and got it.
