Can you be an upper level team without a QB?

I recognize that quote - it's from "That's Football" by Kirk Ferentz.

OH MY GOD!

The only book I would buy from him would be one titled: THAT'S FOOTBALL.

It would be a NYT best seller. It would be better than ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE REPAIR.

Please, please, please, please, please write that book Kirk. It needs to include a forward from KOK. And a book jacket quote from Greg Davis along the lines of, "I didn't know what football was till I met Kirk Ferentz."

True but that defense was beyond great. Miller was MVP and Newton couldn't set his back foot from his drop before he was getting hit. Trent Dilfer could have won his 2nd super bowl with that team. There haven't been very many defenses that good over the years and with all the rule changes in favor of the offenses now.... It's skewed to the QBs where you just have to have a stud QB and offense to compete for the most part now. More so for college but pros as well

I would argue that you must have at least a competitive defense to win. Drew Brees continues to put up big passing numbers, but his Saints teams are awful at defense, so they don't make the playoffs. It's the same reason Big 12 teams struggle in big games - they can't stop any other team from scoring even though they tend to score a lot of points.

Green Bay is a huge example of this. Great QB with good WRs but a defense that has basically been abused in the playoffs. The only exception was 2010 when they won the SB. Every other year GBs defense has failed in the playoffs

That's true too. You won't see a defense rated in the bottom 3rd of the league in the Super Bowl either for just that reason. But it's relative now with how the offenses have the rules bent in their favor. Teams can go the length of the field in 2 min drills like it's nothing anymore. I remember when it was rare to see a successful 2 min drill ran in crunch time. The biggest most important thing for defenses is pass rush. You can't give Qbs and receivers more time to do what they do. DBs can't put hands on receivers hardly making their jobs really tough not to mention the targeting rule..

Lol,

All I can say is if Brian comes in and runs that same damn drab offense I am probably going to get banned. I be dropped more than a few "F" words and that "F" won't stand for "F"erentz.

Assuming that the definition of "upper level" means the level of Ohio State or Alabama where your competing for a national championship nearly every year? At a certain level weaknesses get exposed. Deuce has stated it many times. "you can't hide your QB in college..." At a certain level the talent separates from the wannabes. If you have a bench full of 4 and 5 star players the odds of winning go up markedly.

Some of you are talking like a game manager is a bad thing. At some point you always want the QB to manage the game. What you don't want at any position is a player that hurts the team effort.

If you analyze the best QB's that have played the game, there is usually a great receiver or two there. So you can get into the discussion, would Tom Brady be as good in Cleveland? Cleveland would be better.... But super bowl good? Take Cleveland's QB and put in New England. New England certainly wouldn't be better.

I don't belived
KF teams and style of play can have a "game manager" QB. As stated above, must have a stout D to keep games close and must have a QB that takes care of the ball. Also need a strong running game to move the chains and control the clock. Doesn't have to be flashy but just get the ball into playmakers hands. Not ideal but can have an average QB and be successful. See Trent Dilfer in the SuperBowl years ago.

Other teams need to have a great QB to succeed. Northwestern needs to have an above average QB for their style, for example.

I don't believe KF or BF will expect either QB to do much more than execute the game plan. I think with having offensive options such as a sustained running game and several passing options, this will hopefully alleviate pressure on a young quarterback. More than likely it will be more important for the QB to stay in his lane and just run the offense. As time progresses, and confidence builds, I imagine the QB will be able to utilize his talents once more confidence and competency is gained.

Come on look at Beathard last year, the Beathard that started the season healthy was a completely different player than the one that ended the season. Except for quick hitters he threw extremely poorly over the last 4 or 5 games, his longest pass wasn't over 20 yards. BUT he cut down on turnovers and we ran the ball. Doesn't ANYONE believe that Stanley or another QB can't play as well? Is it that big a stretch?
I believe Stanley has a better arm than Beathard and is fairly mobile. Peyton can run very well. I think we will actually have better receivers than last year, it wouldn't be that hard. Smith was a pass dropping machine.
The debate is what "upper level" means. If it means Ohio State or Alabama level, the resounding answer is NO. Top 25? Maybe....

I heard he's writing a book about a coach who goes back in time to use his future knowledge of offensive football to win games. His book's hero is credited for inventing the forward pass and helmets. It's titled "That was Football" I'm implying he had to go way way back...

Stanley may have a better arm than Beathard if he is stationary in the pocket. There are few who could make the throws Beathard did on the run. Beathard never was the same after his injury, he was still very good, just not as good.

In the NFL, it's always been about the pass rush. No matter how good the defensive backs and linebackers were, they were nothing without a great defensive line. The Purple People Eaters (Vikings - Page and Eller HOFs), the Fearsome Foursome (Rams - Jones and Olsen HOFs), the Doomsday Defense (Cowboys - White HOF, Harvey Martin and Too Tall Jones), and the Steel Curtain (Steelers - Mean Joe Greene HOF, Greenwood, Holmes, and White). All defensive lines that dominated back in the day and their teams were good because of it. Not to mention the 85 Bears. The more things change, the more they stay the same. :)

I humbly thank you for your PM complimenting my awesomeness and requesting an autograph. Since I am preoccupied with many ******* right now, I want you to have this picture of me so you'll have something to keep on the night-stand at the foot of your bunk-bed.

I'd say this is the perfect year for a new qb. Have an award-winning O line ahead of you with one proven receiver to throw to along with tight ends galore. Plus wr talent coming in and an OC ready to make his mark on the team. Glass half-full.

You could insert "Ferentz" for the other F word and go on a rant. Would be an interesting read.

The line wasn't that good at pass blocking, that's why cj was always on the run.
