Can Weisman keep this up?

Weisman will continue to get the bulk but I don't foresee 30+. We need Daniels to come along.

I doubt its a question of him coming along or the other two for that matter.

The more a guy plays without messing up the harder it is for KF to do something different.

I think Weisman will probably keep it up until the B1G season starts and then the coaching staff will start moving the play calling around. At least I hope this is the case, because if Weisman gets hurt Iowa's running game is going to suffer big time. And as the running game goes so does the play action.

My guess is that teams will load the box and make Iowa pass, since the receiving corps isn't up to the task. Which is the same with Minnesota. And then when they get on offense, throw the ball every third play.

They're gonna get as many wins as they can though their first six games. If that means getting Weisman 30 plus every game, so be it. They have a bye after MSU and another in Novemeber before the stretch run. They want to use Daniels more and hopefully will have that luxury at home this week against a weak defense.

I think this is very plausible rationale.

Yes, had not thought about it that way...very good point, McNutt. Additionally, I would bet that Mark will get rested to some extent against Western Michigan...unless we run into trouble.

No, he can't...he is getting lower but he still takes more hits than Greene did due to his different running style. He's not gonna make it with this workload...need to mix Daniels in this week, a lot, at home, before the start of B1G season.

This. Weisman runs more like Greene did as a freshman; very few backs can go the distance averaging 30 yards a carry with such an upright running style. Adrian Peterson was like that at OU and got hurt all the time.

You have to get low if you're going to carry the ball this much over the course of an entire season.

Shaw did it in 95 without injury. He is a tough guy also he can carry a lot this year. Iowa is going to be aiming to run 80 or more plays per game. They have moved the ball best when running on 75% of the plays. If he gets half that is 30 per game. The running overall needs to maintain a 4 yard or better average to keep the chains moving. He does that every game to earn 50% of the carries. I below Daniels could get 4 yards per carry also. So add him more to the mix and that will help keep Weisman at 30 carries per game or 50% of the total.

A point I was thinking about earlier in another thread..

Was there this much rumble about Le'veon Bell last year from Michigan State fans and media?

Bell carried 382 times last year, for 1793 yards, 4.7/carry, and a long run of 40. Those are Weisman-esque numbers through a full thirteen game season.

The same comparison could've been made to Javon Ringer, IIRC. And he was able to keep up that pace for multiple years.

So it is certainly possible. Is that ideal? No. But definitely a possibility.

It's the combination of the workload and upright running style, not just the workload by itself.

Miller: Iowa bets big on workhorse Weisman | Hawk Central

The junior back battered away at Iowa State’s defensive front in a 35-carry, 145-yard, run-over-and-through-guys performance that snapped Iowa’s two-game losing streak to the Cyclones.

“Mark’s been a workhorse for us,â€￾ said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, after his team muscled its way to 2-1. “… He was a little sore last week, as you might imagine. I’ll predict he’ll probably be sore every week.â€￾

I wonder if he will be able to go the distance with the current workload, however; it has been done (Shonn Greene).

I do think if he keeps up with the current workload, he'll probably show wear and tear as the season goes on. I think he gets less carries in situations where we can afford to do so. He needed the carries vs MizzSt and ISU because the game called for it.

As for Bullock, I'm hoping he gets back into the rhythm. He showed he was a very capable back last year.

Greene ended up with 308 carries for the year (although) I don't know if that includes the bowl game). Weisman is on pace for 340, which is an extra games worth.

That said, he probably won't see as much action this week, and there are two bye weeks built into the schedule.

I think he'll get his yards this week (hopefully enough to go over a hundred again), and then hopefully some rest.

I think Minnysoda will wanna attempt rough him up, with how the Hammer pounded them last year. IIRC, the goofers had hung a pic of him in the locker room for added motivation. Also, MSU will be a very physical game, per usual.

So all in all, I gotta say the bye week will come at a perfect time.
