Can we win in the Big Ten with Drakes team

They can finish really high in the Big 10 with Drake's 4 or 5 best players plus maybe 2 or 3 other guys who are good enough to be starters. My guess is Drake's lineup would be a bubble team with no upgrades. So add 3 new starters on top of that and we would be pretty damn good.

Indiana and Minnesota, both whom hired former Drake coaches, are currently in the same boat as Iowa in terms of their current roster. You potentially have an all-conference point guard as a starting building block. Can we give it 2 or 3 weeks, and actually see what the roster looks like before we panic?

Honestly at this point I'd put my faith in "Drake's team" versus the Iowa team what we'd put out the past two years going into next season. After that however I'd hope that the "Drake team" changed the culture in Iowa City and we could continue to build a culture and program that could compete year in and year out.
Naw I don't have any delusions of grandeur with that. Even just the top half/middle of the pack 5th-10th would be amazing. And I don't think he should be expected to do that. This is a recalibrate/rebuild from scratch situation. It'll be interesting to see how these guys who started off at D2 can do against the BIG. But we'd be pretty nuts to slap on crazy expectations. Hope for the best and let's see
What's your definition of difference maker? In my opinion, only top 10 teams have more than one. It seems like we have one, but I highly doubt we have more than that. We aren't going to win next year by having difference makers. If we win, it will be because of tenacious defense and our one difference maker making things happen.
I'm not speaking for longtimer but to me when looking for difference makers to add besides Stirtz I'd say they need another really good shooter and an inside presence at both ends. They don't have to all avg 15 pts but they outta be capable of going and getting ya 20 on any given night when the matchups are right etc.
It's kinda where a guy like Dix and or Sandfort would come into play. But we are sorely lacking for anyone on the inside atm too I think we'll notice that big time unless it gets addressed.

If nothing else, our D will be an irritant to much of our competition. And these Drake guys know that style of D already, so we are ahead in that area.
We sorely need a big inside presence. In the hawkcentral article on Combs, he talks about Manyawu being an undersized 5, a tough guy, a rebounder, a finisher around the rim but still we need some inside size.

Right, Drake did something Iowa hasn't done in 26 years last month, and that's beating a P5 foe in the NCAA's. I don't think we can sit here and pretend that we have any fucking clue as to what it will take when you look at it from that prospective. Are the Drake players good enough to compete in the B1G? I don't know, but they just did something Iowa hasn't been able to do in close to 3 decades....so maybe hold up.

Not trying to be a dick, but there are currently a 1000 guys in the portal. So many more chess moves to be made before we get a big picture look on what the 25-26 season could potentially be.

Right, and we're at what, 4 or 5 ships spoken for? Also, reminder that scholarships expand to 15 starting this year. Iowa still has 10-11 spots to fill on their roster...and while I know NIL reports seem bleak, Iowa does have more than a lot of schools right? I mean, Iowa is not tops in the sport, but they are likely in the top 40 as far as NIL just based off their lot in life and being in the B1G. I am not sure year 1 Iowa is going to have the most athletic team with the best players, but I feel confident that we have a guy who knows how to win with less, so I am excited to see strategy as much as anything with our new program.

I think a better question to ask is just how good could this Iowa team be, given they signed the best player available at the most important position in the sport, and who arguably is their best point guard in the past 25-30 years. With 2/3 of the roster still TBD. I see more upside/high ceiling themes right now than panic.

Also, you know Iowa is getting these Drake guys at a major discount and building foundation and depth. Those guys matter. Iowa could have used depth this season. I don't expect Iowa to go 30-4 this year or something, but the ground work has to be laid for his culture and system and doing that with players who are familiar with the program already to help bring on others will be huge.
That, and, be honest, we have the #1 or #2 portal guy in the country right now with Bennett and a 4 star shooter who has 4 more years of eligibility. It could already be much worse but it isn't.

Cannot win Big with Drake players and coaches for sure. Could finish higher than we did this year in Big, maybe. We need more player and we are just starting. Best to let the new chef whip up his dish and give it a try come November. Never know, we might just love it.
