Can someone explain why some say we’ll be better next year?

Jon says it a lot and I’ve heard it on the boards, but I don’t understand.

We lose Wadley but we bring back one of the worst offenses in the country. The young guys get better, probably, but we’re 117th. We’re not going to suddenly leap up and be a top 50 offense.

Defense is losing a ton and they will certainly be worse.

So why the feeling we’re for sure gonna be better?

Tryng to figure that out myself. Maybe Sabin will let the O line coaches visit.

Toren Young might get some minutes and be a feature back...and he is more fitting for the Iowa offensive schemes...of pounding it up the middle with zone blocking. Wadley is somewhat of a misfit in such a system, albeit, with great open field talent...and pass catching....which needs to be used properly.

Iowa will have an OC with a year of experience, and not a plebe.

Iowa will not have two starting offensive tackles whose experiences to start the year were in high school football.

Iowa will have a full year to figure out how to be aggressive offensively when teams decide to blitz them, and take advantage of such blitzes with their talented tight ends.

Iowa will have a more seasoned QB...who didn't spend most of the spring and summer wondering who is going to be the starting QB.

The coaching staff, as a whole, will have a full year of melding under their belt.

These are possible reasons...but Kirk tends to make it all sort out as a safe 6-6 or 7-5 muddled ending, no matter the players, coaches, schemes. And he calls the shots.

Several reasons ...

1) We return more starters/depth than the average B1G team, especially in the trenches and at QB where it counts.

2) Easier opponents. This year we had PSU, OSU and MSU in the crossovers, about as tough as it gets. Next year we have Indiana, Maryland, PSU.

3) Other contenders in the B1G West have much tougher schedules in 2018. Wiscy has Michigan, PSU, Rutgers. Nobby gets Michigan, OSU, MSU. Northwestern has Michigan, MSU, Rutgers.

4) We get ISU, Wiscy, NW and Nebby at home.

those assumptions are based on gained experience at the young spots.

Which doesn’t cancel out losing guys like Wadley, all 3 linebackers, potentially Josh Jackson, etc.

It’s way too easy and way too common to just say we’ll be better next year and continue the delusion.

The expectations rise from the softer schedule - Iowa could be favored in ten games but lose to the only two ranked teams on it's schedule. People will crow about how great of a turnaround it is and new Kirk, and all kinds of other we're back nonsense. Iowa will finish 2nd to Wisconsin. Iowa will go to a bowl and get destroyed.

Everybody likes to harp on expectations and how Kirk is about the same as Hayden.

Hayden had to play Michigan and Ohio State every year. That's at least one guaranteed loss on talent being talent every year. OSU and Michigan had more scholarships. The Big Ten didn't have revenue sharing. Hayden got paid $48,000/yr! The Iowa program had 17 straight losing seasons before he got here. There were like 8 bowl games. All the advantages were there for the blue bloods. They played 11 games. 7 wins during this period is like 9 wins during the Ferentz era.

Beating OSU or Michigan in the 80's was like climbing Everest. If you weren't a superior physical specimen, you were going to die during the attempt.

The expectations have to rise when the competition gets weaker overall - which is where it will be next year. Next year, Iowa could win every game it is favored in. Just like this year.

It will be a new year with the same poor talent at the skill positions. Basically have new running backs with little experience. Lose all 3 linebackers, 2 of which will be hard to replace, the 3rd one not so much. Our end play is awful, Jackson will likely be gone, and the other corner position is not good with either Ragumba or Ojemudia. Its the repeated saying at Iowa that we will be better next year with more experience, and then the next year we say the same thing, rinse and repeat. Guess what, we still have the same poor coaching staff every year, same archaic schemes, etc. Actually the offense is the worst it has ever been, and as someone said, it could improve a ton, which is highly unlikely, and still be very poor. Until there is a huge upgrade in talent at the skill positions, then this offense will continue to be bad. Nobody on this staff has the ability to bring in talent that will turn this offense around.

Yes, the Hawks will be better next year. Wadley goes (tough loss, but there are some good RBs coming back). Replacing the LBs will be tougher, this causes me the most concern about next year. Losing Jackson was not expected at the start of the season, but looks likely now. They have experience at corner, obviously not at Jackson's level, but look at the strides he made between last year and this year, so it can happen at CB. Welsh is gone, but the Paulsen boys appear ready (at least looking at them). I don't think Daniels goes, but if he did, he'll be a tough replacement, too. The OL will be better. The DL will be better. The TEs will be better. The QB will be better. The Safeties will be better. The WRs will be better (I hope on this one). I also think BF will be a better coach. Plus, the schedule is lighter. ISU, Wisconsin, NW, Nebraska all at home. PSU is the toughest (by far) road game.

Good one.

Iowa being aggressive. Iowa taking advantage of what the other team does, using mismatches.

Hahahahahahahahahaha!

Yeah, next year is the year the coaches start to coach. Woohoo!!

You forgot to mention that for at least the last ten years or more Michigan, Notre Dame, and Nebraska have been down programs compared to where they were when Hayden came in to coach at Iowa. Some schools like Wisconsin got on their recruiting horses and took advantage of the situation but not us. We’re not sexy.

And your still a douche

How many times will we hear "we lose our lbs that won't be easy to replace"? I seem to remember hearing this exact same thing every single time we've graduated lbs.

Legitimate concern given how few reps our back ups got this year. And the fact that they'll be counted on to carry that dogshiat offense for yet another year.
