Can Our Coaches Adapt?

All bashing aside (I know I've been guilty of it this year) do you think our football staff can adapt? There are tons of good coaches out there who can teach their system, but only the great ones are able to adapt or change their system to best suit their players.

I just look at what the Shanahan's are doing in DC with Griffen and it speaks volumes about how good of coaches they are. They are more than willing to adapt to the strengths of their players, all the while working to what they want to do long term.

Then I look at D'Antoni with the Lakers and what a trainwreck that is trying to force their players to play a system that is such a horrible fit. I wonder if that's what it looked like this year to outsiders watching our football team. I never root for the Lakers, but I almost feel sorry for the players.

Anyway, back to the point. Do we have a staff that can adapt? I think we'll find out a ton next year if this is the end of KF, or if he can find the old glory. If he continues to press ahead with the same, or if he's willing to even slightly mix things up.

It isn't can they, it is will they. I think KF will adapt to a level he is comfortable with. The question then is will it be enough?

I am struggling to recall a single game in which we adpated during adveristy on the offense side of the ball. I think the defense has adapted plenty in the past.

They did pretty well adapting in 2004 after all the running back injuries...although I think this is a valid question. The offense with stanzi, djk and mcnutt from 3 yrs ago should have put up much better numbers. Heard through the grapevine that KOK was less than thrilled with the handcuffs put on him with that collection. I say all of this, but I also thought this yrs team was pretty much going to suck no matter what due to having no playmakers. But again...I think it is a valid question.

We are so into BALANCE that we refuse to adapt to anything the opponent is doing on defense. We played some of the worst pass defenses in the Big10 this year and did we ever try to exploit it? No, we came out and did what we always do. Try to establish the run, followed by short passes on 3rd down. And we did that all game long. Even against NE, wind at our back, we're down by 6 and we run three straight running plays. Why?????

You know, I'd be more content with the gameplan if we came out and TRIED to exploit the weakness of a defense and it didn't work. Playing a bad rushing D, we come out and try to smash mouth it and it doesn't work.....so we adapt and start using the pass to set up the run later. But we won't. We'll keep running into a brick wall, cause eventually we have to excecute right???

Obviously we don't have a say in letting KF go, but this year has really pushed me to the brink. I am curious to see what happens in 2013, but I was also curious what this year would bring with new blood in the coaching ranks. Instead we got one of the worst, if not the worst year in Hawkeye football that I can remember. I'm having the same feelings towards KF that I did with Lick. Just won't even bother watching the games if this is the best product we can come up with.

This is what I didn't understand during the Indiana game, yes Indiana had one of the worst rush defenses in the conference but they also knew KF would want to establish the run. I know that game was cold and rainy but still they stacked the box all game long.

I watched almost every basketball game when Lickliter was here and I will continue to watch the football games while KF is coaching this football team but it is going to be difficult if he doesn't do something different next season and beyond.

Good point - BTW did you know people are now referring to Ferentz as Kirkliter?

2004 is the first thing that came to mind...but that was a long time ago and looks like a fluke aberration.

that is what is very frustrating about the coaching staff over the years. I am all for your style but adapt to the players you have. We could have had "Johnny Football" this year and we still would have went hand-off hand-off short pass on 3rd and 6.

2004 was not really adapting to the players they had, because they didn't have players at RB. So it was forced on them. If they had one viable option, it would have been back to the system until they broke that kid too.

Ditto!!! That sums it all up.

Can our coaches adapt? I don't think so, not after 14 years of doing things the same way. Spend 5 minutes reading a Ferentz press conference and you'll have your answer - he's comfortable where things are, they just need to do the things they do "better". The notion that Iowa does the same thing over and over, they just do it better, is a threadbare philosophy. After 14 years, it's been figured out, it doesn't matter how well you do it. Adapt? If they wanted to, sure. But they don't want to. At least I haven't seen any evidence of it.

What's more probable: kirk ferentz gets on stage with the rolling stones on their current tour, or he adapts to his players strengths?

Can you give me an example of our coaching staff ever adapting to anything?
KF stubbornly stands on the sidelines chomping gum waiting in vain for the college football world to adapt to him.
