Can Daniels redshirt this year?

It didn't burn his redshirt. He could still redshirt.

Remember Canzeri played as a freshman then redshirted his sophomore yeat. You get 5 years to play 4. It doesn't matyer when you use it.

Exactly, with Iowa's history of running backs getting hurt or dropping out, the real question is why would you want to waste a redshirt year on a healthy elligible running back? If he is good enough to play then play him before he disappears. What are the odds that Iowa's top 4 running backs all make through the season with no issues.

yeah i agree with this line of thinking - what are the odds iowa has a RB worth a crap that stays around 5 years?

If he gets less than 100 carries total in two years, will it be worth it wasting the two years?

There are two thought processes when it comes to redshirts:
1. Redshirt him and let him develop on the scout team. The scout team you say?!? Yes, the scout team because no coach is going to give a redshirted player reps with the third team let alone the second or first team in practice and take away reps from players who may actually see the field that year. The exception is our 3rd string QB as he is two plays away from pulling off the redshirt.
2. Don't redshirt him. Let him get a taste of game action in garbage time and on special teams. This can help him get up to speed quicker knowing the pace of an actual game. This also will get him reps in practice with the first and second team, also speeding along development.

In Daniels's case, he not only got garbage time and special teams play, he also got practice reps. Also, he did get to carry the ball in real game time against OSU in a game where we actually had a chance to win. Doesn't sound like much of a waste to me.
