campus tryouts is the worst idea I've ever heard of since the pet rock.

Kyle Galloway, he had some big games for Iowa at the end of the Davis and start of Alford era.

Kyle was an invited walk on it's not like they found him in some pick up game.

when I was at Iowa (95-99) a lot of the sports teams would post an open invitation tryout in the DI ... no idea if this is still done, but you don't have to go back to the '80s

also, Kyle didn't need and athletic schollie because he was on an academic ride

too bad he hurt his back and had to quit (making a 6-5, 190 lb guy guard people like Tractor Traylor isn't so great for his health)
