Campolattano to Ohio State

Andrew Campolattano (Bound Brook, New Jersey), a four-time state champion, has signed with Ohio State. Campolattano is ranked as the No. 14 senior recruit in the country by InterMat.

Nice pickup for Ryan and the Buckeyes.

Camp reminds me a lot of Patrick Bond coming out of HS. Camp has not shown the ability to be physical enough against the top competition in HS, which is why I think he will struggle in college at 197. On the other hand, he also has never been totally focused on wrestling either so his upside could be huge. He will be an interesting guy to watch develop in Columbus, they are stockpiling some great talent over there and they are being very aggressive on the recruiting trail.

I agree they are stock piling the recruits over there but if a couple of them dont pan out will they have the depth? Pretty sure Campo was looking for a full ride for all 5 years if they keep doing that they will have alot of walk-ons.

thats just it they are giving out full rides and getting good wrestlers but will they have a full team of them heck no unless some take partials just to be a team player but in todays world and how much college costs why would you?

When it comes to sports like wrestling, coaches have to be creative with scholarships and a place like OSU has an advantage over most. They have a tremendous Alumni base that donates a tremendous amount of money to help kids fund their education. Many athletes are entitled to much of the monies that are donated exclusively to the Athletic Dept. that are used for schalorships outside of the sport they compete in. So if a wrestler has good grades or has other special talents in art or theater per say they can get scholarships for that also. So Camp may be getting full ride money, but he may be only using a partial from the wrestling program. Iowa does this same thing as I know of a couple of the kids on the team now that are basically going to school for free based on what they get from wrestling and other scholarships.

Thats not how I heard it done in other sports. In football, if a kid is on a full academic scholarship, that money doesn't come from the athletic department, but the scholarship still counted against the 85 total they are alotted. My guess is this is similar in other sports. OSU cannot just find ways to give kids money.

Yes they can. As a former NCAA Division I scholarship wrestler I know for a fact that wrestlers are able to gain scholarship money from outside the athletic dept. Coaches have 9.9 full ride scholarships to give out in a fully funded wrestling program. Those scholarships are often divided between 20-25 guys, so almost all wrestlers are receiving partial athletic aid. Iowa finds ways to get guys money also, whether it is through grants, loans or scholarships. Some schools can offer more lucrative packages and with huge scholarship funds some have advantages over others.

Add the fact that Ohio is a pretty good high school wrestling state, they can keep kids home and they won't need as big a scholarship due to instate tuition.
