Call in Radio Program - What's the Point?

It really does not matter what the question is, KF's stock answer is he's the coach and you're no expert to question him about anything. Actually Gary D. provides more answers than Kirk does, maybe he should just do the program himself, it would be less frustrating for everyone looking for a real explanation to what Iowa is trying to do on the field of play.

I don't know of any other business where the head guy could get away with such condescending responses. Have you noticed how he tries to re-phrase the question back to the callers asking more pointed questions? If the caller has already hung up, a dismissive response is what is offered in return.

I can't listen to this drivel anymore, please let me know if you hear anything that sounds like a genuine response to a sincere question.

That's football radio.

Sounded like the same ole got to execute and that is what we are from the radio transcript. Did not see anything about needing to clean some things up though.

Gary D. could do as well by having a manikin with three buttons on its back that he presses in response to each question.

Button 1: "That's football"
Button 2: "We need to execute better"
Button 3: "You know what Chuck Noll used to say about experts"

And maybe a fourth button that says "Go Hawks!"

The program would be about as informative as what I heard tonight.

I understand that we're not going to hear KF talk about the next opponent in any detail, other than to highlight what has been working for them thus far. If you asked him what he had seen on tape that he thinks can be exploited and how they plan to do it, he's not going to answer that question. But if you asked him the same question about the prior week's opponent, what would stop him from spelling it out for everyone so they had an idea of what our game plan was designed to exploit?

Look, football is not rocket science and you don't need to be a PhD to understand the basic fundamentals of preparation. You look at the opponent's formations, how they execute from those formations, their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies when confronted with certain situations. So what does the coaching staff do? In a nutshell, they structure their plan to exploit the opponent's weaknesses, try to avoid playing into their strengths, and try to learn their tendencies. And on the flip side, they recognize where they need to work to address their own weaknesses, they reinforce their strengths, and decide how to do a better job of decoying or mixing up their own tendencies.

Why can't Coach Ferentz give us a taste of the preparation that went into the previous week's game? And if GD is such a great teacher and so skilled in his coaching, why can't he give us some insight into what they are trying to do? Look, none of that is going to be a revelation to the opposing coaching staff - they know what Iowa is trying to do already - so what's the harm in explaining it in a coherent way? It would sure give me a boost of confidence if I heard something along those lines, then I would be more willing to agree that it is just a matter of execution. But the way it stands now, I'm uncertain they have done the proper preparation, thus our questions regarding the offensive performance to date are justified.

Does it really matter if they had a plan or not? We've heard it many a times from KF, "we're gonna play more no huddle hurry up", "we'll be looking for a lot more big plays this year", we're going to do this and that and it's gonna be awesome.

As soon as one thing doesn't work out or someone makes a mistake, mr. regressive crawls back into his hole and we see the same **** as usual.

I am assuming the **** was the word ship since he is referred to as captain or was I four consonants off? :)

I understand your point but the examples you offered are just his throw-away remarks, they do not constitute a plan, at least not what I am looking to see from KF. But since that is all we get from him, we go away wanting and because his remarks are so vacuous, we begin doubting that he's up to the job.

He is not willing to accept the fact that a big part of the HC job is public relations, and frankly, he is failing when he glibly/snidely responds to sincere questions as he does. There's no excuse for him to treat serious questions like that and if GB and Sally Mason had any spine they would tell him that he needs to execute his pressers better, after all, this isn't the NE Patriots and he's not Bill Belichick. It's not like he needs to change his entire personality but he can try to be a coach in the same vein as when his players ask him questions. The fans and those that cover the team deserve no less than what he gives to his players. I believe that if he would do just that, he would regain most, if not all, of his detractors and he could focus his full attention on getting his team prepared for their next game.

I was fooled once again into listening as my neighbor convinced me there would be some good callers letting KF have it. Well all I heard was Burt from Buffalo Center say, "Gee, Coach, you're doing a swell job and us real fans are behind you 100%. Go Hawks!"

Then there was that rube whose question was, "Hey coach, remember when we met at that I-club function and I told you me & the wife have been to 30 straight Hawk games? Well it's 39 now!" (awkward silence) KF replies in his disinterested monotone, "That's great."

So maybe now I will learn. SoundOff is the only Hawkeye radio show worth listening to. Oh, and of course, that thing before HawkTalk being broadcast from Legends in WDM. You were great Jon.

I'm not even convinced KF was actually at Carlos O'Kelly's. I think they just had his voice recorded with his 3 stock answers:
#1 We just gotta execute
#2 That's football
#3 thanks for the call

Bingo.. Sure the losing doesn't help but the above nails it for me.

It is also tough to listen to someone who says all the right things but come game day we see the same things!

KF doesn't owe the press a damn thing.

And give me one good reason why fans deserve anything close to the same access to KF and the program that players get.

I'll hang up and listen.

It's so exasperating to see how inept he is in recognizing/admitting there are more issues with this offensive scheme than just a one point loss to ISU. Is he serious when he implies that if Iowa had put up 21 points or held ISU to 16 points that we would be on track? If he is, then he is not observing what is happening on the field of play. I understand what adversity is about, I get it, but pulling his head into that turtle shell will only exacerbate his problem.

I did not say they deserve the same access to him as his players, please read what I wrote again. Summarizing, he needs to be a coach in the same sense as with his players - provide thoughtful answers to sincere questions. However, when he responds in such a disrespectful manner, why should the press or the public give him the benefit of the doubt?

You clearly didn't read what he said.

KF doesn't owe us much, but that little he gives is pretty damn bad and when you are not in tune with your fan base it usually doesn't last long..

I think you're wrong. In speaking through the press, he is speaking to us (loyal fans, financial supporters, etc). If he is snide and short with the press, he isn't helping himself or his program.

He is "turrible" in the PR department, and he doesn't inspire confidence. His lack of charm (aka "we're not sexy") is just fine when he's winning, but barely so.

When he's losing, he just seems angry and hostile to me. I guess $4M+ a year will do that to a guy. :)

I agree, he has the attitude that not everyone is going to be happy with him so why bother. But the real problem is, those same people that he so readily dismisses could actually be some of his best supporters if he responded intelligently to the concerns they raise. So in that sense, he is only reaping what he has sown.

I think it is high time for him to feel some real heat and let's see how well he handles it. The team is surely watching him and if he really cares about character development and maturity, let's see him demonstrate it.
