But there has to be more to this story right? I could maybe understand suspension a few games but to be kicked off the team? Do Mormons not believing forgivens of sin? And aren't they the ones that believe its alright to have multiple wives?

I think he legitimatly got kicked off the team for having sex. I heard Steve Young talking yesterday and he said BYU expects everyone to honor the code. I skimmed through the Honor Code and their are some strange things listed:
-No facial hair unless it is needed for a theatrical performance or causes skin irritation when you shave
-Cant drink coffee or tea
-Cant use foul language
-Cant engage in homosexual activities(they dont mean it as against gays, but against gays showing affection)

I believe I read somewhere that he admitted to it. I can't believe they kicked him off the team for being honest about it. Yes they are strict with their honor code, but come one.
