Cade McNamara vs Marco Lainez at 4:30

Iowa recruited most of these castoffs and under performers away from MAC-level only offers. And proud of it.
None of the Iowa castoffs played for a P4 program after leaving Iowa.
Few amounted anything at even the 2nd or 3rd tier level.
All of which begs the questions of - who thought these players had B10 level talent?
OR
Are these the best QB’s we could persuade to come to Iowa?
The answer is bad either way.

I'd forgotten about Kirk's Faux Pas.
That was a really dumb unnecessary thing to have said by coach... I can't see him ever doing something like that again. I know he was trying to be funny and all but.... If you're Hogan that's not at all how that came off. Maybe that's partially why we've sucked at recruiting QBs. Coaches can use that sort of thing to negatively recruit against us with. Not that they needed anything else...

That would be a very distant reason behind our offense not using them efficiently and rarely throwing down field in the past.

The former Iowa QB who played for Texas Tech is Nic Shimonek. He redshirted at Iowa in 2013 before transferring to Texas Tech for the 2014 season.

He played sparingly in 2015 and was a backup to Patrick Mahomes in 2016 before taking over as the starting quarterback for the 2017 season. Shimonek finished the season passing for 3,963 yards and 33 touchdowns

I heard Nic Shimonek's name come up last night when watching actor Glen Powell (Twisters remake) talk on one of those late night talk shows. Powell was talking about how he is a big Texas football fan and then Powell just happened to mention he was had been talking to Nic Shimonek, who Powell referred to as Patrick Mahomes coach!

Anyway, Actor Glen Powell was coached by former Iowa and Texas Tech quarterback Nic Shimonek to prepare for his role in the Hulu series Chad Powers. The show, which premiered in September 2025, stars Powell as a former top quarterback who disguises himself to walk onto a struggling college team
