Cade McNamara vs Marco Lainez at 4:30

Cody Sokol transferred to Louisiana Tech in 2014, where he passed for 3,436 yards and 30 touchdowns for a single year record of 9-5 with a close loss in the conference USA finals and a win in the heart of Dallas bowl.

Jake Rudock for a single year at Michigan in 2015 for a record of 10-3 and a Citrus bowl win over Florida.

In the last 10 years…
Has any QB who left the Iowa program gone on to succeed at a P4 school?

Wasn't there a guy that went to Texas Tech and started for one year?

Edit: I looked it up

The former Iowa QB who played for Texas Tech is Nic Shimonek. He redshirted at Iowa in 2013 before transferring to Texas Tech for the 2014 season.

He played sparingly in 2015 and was a backup to Patrick Mahomes in 2016 before taking over as the starting quarterback for the 2017 season. Shimonek finished the season passing for 3,963 yards and 33 touchdowns

For what its worth...

I see Duece Hogan is still active in 2025 and is now playing for FCS Nicholls State University located in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The Colonels are an FCS school that plays in the Southland conference. Hogan started out at Iowa in 2020, then transfered to Kentucky, then later transfered to NMSU in 2024 and finally Nicholls St in 2025. He has thrown for over 600 yards in 2025.

Joey Labas is still playing at Central Michigan University and is part of a QB rotation that plays regularly at CMU. So far Labas has thrown for over 400 yards at CMU this year

Deacon Hill transfered to Utah Tech in 2024. Not sure if he is playing in 2025 or not.

Spencer Petras transfered to Utah St in 2024 for his 7th year of elligibilty and was named honorable mention all-MWC in 2024. Petras went undrafted in the 2025 draft but managed to get tryouts with the Chiefs and the 49ers, but was never signed.

Alex Padilla transfered to SMU in 2023, threw a total of 7 passes for the Mustangs and retired from football after 2023.

Nate Stanley was drafted by the Vikings in 2020 and was on the practice squad for a couple of years before officially retiring in 2023.

Tyler Wiegers transferred to EMU and started for EMU in 2018, throwing for over 1800 yards in his one remaining year of elligibilty. I think this was back when you had to graduate before you could transfer and still play in FBS, without sitting out a year.

Peyton Mansell transferred to Abilene Christian University in 2020, played 3 years for ACU, and has not played since 2022.

CJ Beathard was drafted by the 49ers, started off and on for the 49ers before being released, then was a backup for the Jaguers but did not play much behind Trevor Lawernce, and was released last year. This year he tried to catch on with Giants but did not make it. Last report he was signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad.

Deuce quit the Iowa program due to a badly-told joke by Kirk in a presser, and that has led to his wandering path through the lower reaches of college football.
