C.J. Beathard Impressing at 49ers Camp

Not what I read, completed 3 passes and under threw a lot of WR's.Didnt think he had a strong enough arm to ever be a starter.

I certainly don't mean this as a knock on CJ, but you'd expect the Niners to say good things about him since most think they over-drafted him by taking him in the 3rd round. Hopefully he does earn the #2 job and get some quality practice reps for the good of his future.

He's also going against Barkley who's had a head start with not only being in the NFL for awhile but Shanahans offense too. So if CJ is jumping him it'd be a surprise especially this early on. They've hardly even had pads on yet.

So the niners drafted him to be a backup for the next however many years. With the notion that they would go get either Kirk Cousins or draft the kid from USC in this next off-season. If they get lightning in a bottle, cool. Beathard has the grit and toughness to be a very longtime nfl backup. As a niners fan, make no mistake, they're going after Cousins and if they don't land him the kid from USC next year, Beathard is meant to be the backup.

It sure looks that way... I wish they'd leave Cousins alone... He's not a bad QB by any means but he'll be 30 by the time they get him and they'll have to break the bank to get him. I just think for what Cousins brings there's cheaper options out there.. I just can't stomach paying a guy that's like the 12th to 15th best QB like a top 3 guy. I just can't... I'd rather get younger guy like Garoppalo or heck CJ might develop into something pretty good too. What can Cousins do that CJ can't with experience? They are about the same size similar arm strength... The 49ers have so many other positions to upgrade too that pouring so much into him just isn't smart... But I bet your right the stars are aligning for them to match up next yr..

Makes sense. Cousins has developed in to a nice NFL starter. Coming out of college he was thought to be a career back-up type guy in the NFL also and only drafted in the 4th round. Amazing how many 3rd-6th round QBs turn out to be really good QBs in the NFL. Brady in the 6th round is a classic example.

Are you kidding? Look at his stats. Cousins is a very proven commodity while CJ has proven nothing in the NFL. So, for starters, there is that. Just look at his numbers and tell me who are seven better QBs than him right now. There might not be five better, actually. He is pretty darn good.

Look at stats since he became top tier. They are very good once he hit his stride. How can you say there are better cheaper options? He has earned his big payday.

Tell me where I am wrong, and prove it statistically. Don't just make some blanket statements without backing them up. I like CJ, but come on...

Well for one thing stats in regards to QBs is NOT everything. Lots of QBs have put up hollow stats over the years. But Give or take here's my list of QBs and how I'd rank em.
1 Brady
2 Rodgers
3 Ryan
4 Brees
5 Rothlisberger
6 Wilson
7 Carr
8 Luck (I'd have him higher if he were healthy and had an Oline worth a crap
9 Eli Manning
10 Rivers
11 Marriota
12 Newton
13 Prescott Hard to gauge him on that team he's on he might end up higher too
14 Stafford
15 Cousins You could make an argument he should go ahead of Mariota but I can't put him in top 10 I just can't..
16 Alex Smith
17 Palmer

I would take the top 8 on hawkfnntn's list easily over Cousins. I would also take Newton and Stafford for sure over Cousins. Cousins throws for a lot of yards, but also throws poorly timed interceptions, and doesn't seem to come through in the clutch.

Good list. I would put Stafford and Cousins much higher. Perhaps 9 and (gulp) 10.

I probably put Matt Ryan a little too high. I could see putting him at 5 and bumping up Brees and Rothlisberger. But I don't see Matt slowing down anytime soon with the weapons he has

Manning has rings and will be in HOF He's got a couple stud receivers and young TE now. Rivers might end up there too with all he's done/still doing. Stafford and Cousins have a ways to go to catch them even I think... Just my 2 cents though. Stafford much like Cousins has some hollowish stats. But that said you get much lower than 13 on this list and it gets to be slimmer pickings. I don't like guys like Flacco or Tannehill much. Tannehill is young enough he could get better but he's gotta show it first.

CJB lost his mojo. He got beatdown so much the last 2 years that he lost his swagger. Maybe Kyle Shannonhan can get that baller mentality back in CJB.

Beathard competing for #2 and Kittle currently on the two deeps...............

I hope the Niners don't go getting a free agent like Cousins next year... Maybe if not next yr the one after CJ might be a legit player. I'd love to see him get a shot with my fav team out there. Cousins will be 30 and crazy expensive. The 9ers are in rebuild mode but have a pretty good young group of guys to start that with. Let CJ be a part of that and see where you are at the end of next yr... The team can get way more bang for their buck if CJ can take the reigns as opposed to Cousins.
Kittle I think will be a stud too. I think he along side McDonald should make a nice duo there. Lots of guys are down on McDonald but I think he can be a solid player too he's flashed at times. Due to his recent contract extension he's practically untradeable or cutable really.

How much time does Lynch/Shannonhan have to rebuild this roster?

How much time does Lynch/Shannonhan have to rebuild this roster?

They have pretty legit contracts. Both are exactly the same length 6 years. Generally speaking with a six year contract they're not going to cut them til after the 3rd year so they got at least 3 and then the hot seat starts. Generally too when you are rebuilding the whole team with the draft you gotta give it 3 years. I think they'd like to see life this year, improvement the following year, and being on the rise in year 3. Seems to be the plan. If you listen to them talk they have that kind of long term strategy (think Theo and the Cubs) for rebuilding the team. But unlike teams like Cleveland that always seem to be "rebuilding" they have a direction, which is cool as a niners fan.
