As a former Herky mascot, let me start by saying that it is an unwritten rule for a visiting mascot to take a "dive" to the other mascot at any sporting event. But this fricking guy is awesome. Anytime that Brutus goes down is a great moment...especially in his own house. Not only does he tackle him mid-field while carrying the flag, but runs with the Buckeye football team to chase down Brutus in the endzone and kick the crap out of him in from of the team and 100k+ fans. EPIC WIN!

Herkeye, thanks for sharing. I've always wondered what it's like being a team mascot. Have to think in September, at least, it can be hotter than he11 in those outfits, and they probably aren't the lightest things to have on your head/shoulders/back. And all the abuse you take from fans, away and even at home. Would be interested to know what your experience was like. Thanks.

I was Herky for most athletic events from 2003 thru the spring of 2005 - The Herky helmet for football is especially heavy, but it rests more on your shoulders than on your head, but it still isn't easy to maneuver or see for that matter. I'm 6'4 but with the helmet on, I was 7'1, so I hit the helmet on just about every door I walked under. The winter sports herky head is a lot lighter and easier to see. There were 5 of us that did the job. All 5 would do something during the football games: One would have pre and post game activities, one for the 1st quarter, one for 2nd quarter, etc... We had to or else one would get extremely exhausted/overheated. I remember the throw back game against Kent State in 2004. It was over 100 degrees on the field. I sweat off 4 1/2 pounds that day and had to take a trip to the emergency room due to dehydration. It was all worth it though. As far as interaction with other mascots, we would meet up before the game and go over some improv skits/play fighting and then hit it up like WWE on the field.
The best part was being on the field. It is a whole hell of a lot louder than in the stands. I had the privelege of riding out on the platform at the beginning of the 2003 homecoming game against Michigan and planting the flag in the 50 yard line. I still get goose bumps just thinking about 70,000 people roaring.
Away games are pretty brutal. The other mascots are always really cool to hang with and I made some good friends that way. But the opposing fans suck. I was punched while in uniform at the 2003 Iowa State game in the parking lot after the game, but a bunch of Iowa fans surrounded the clown and chased him off. I also got hit by a beer bottle at the 2003 Wisconsin game. The Illinois fans were pretty docile in 2004 and actually the let me sit in the student section and mess around with the fans.
The fan interaction was very interesting to say in the least. During the tailgate for the 2003 PSU game, there was a middle-aged lady (pretty good looking Iowa fan) that asked me while in costume if Herky was a boy or girl in front of her husband and friends. I flexed my arms to did my best to act like a guy since we CANNOT TALK while in costume. She then grabbed my junk. "Oooh herky's a man!"
Anyway, that's a mascot in a nutshell. Don't talk and act a fool!

I had the honor of being Herky from 1985-1988.

We only had 2 rules:

1) Don't mess with the officials
2) Don't puke in the head

LOL...those were funny clips. Not politically correct obviously, but funny nonetheless.

Also, thanks to you guys/gals and all your Herky brethern. My young boys, and many future Hawk fans, have loved Iowa and Hawk events because of seeing Herky, or more impressionable, being photographed with Herky. It made their weekend. Thanks.
