Butch Davis Fired

Pierre Thomas's college production wasn't that impressive. So how precisely does that illustrate exceptional development by Zooker and crew?

Furthermore, Reggie Mitchell was the RB coach at Illinois from '05 to '09. How much of his coaching was responsible for the success of Mendenhall and LeShoure (and, perhaps, Thomas). Furthermore, the prior OL coach for the Illini through much of those years is now the OL coach at South Carolina.

Lastly, is Zook not on a pretty hot seat these days?

Look, I'm not going to attempt to have a discussion about position coaches at Illinois, and I sure as hell, as a UF alum, do not want to get to a point where I defend Zook, but for a prospective recruit, you can look at those three guys, and their two Super Bowl rings, and think Illinois is a good destination for RBs. I don't know how many RBs Iowa has in the NFL, but I would be surprised if it was more than one.

guess homer just presented to much detail and to many facts to continue

Albert Young would be the 2nd, although not really sure if he's with anyone right now.

Not really, he just took the discussion in an area which both diverges from what I was discussing, and from what I have knowledge of.

Gun to my head, my guess is that the positive of having their last three starters playing in the NFL (and having success) works for Illinois more than the negative of their running back coach from '09 leaving. I am not saying that any RB recruit would be stupid to ignore Illinois, I am just saying they have a lot to offer.

MultipleDundie is definitely correct insofar that Illinois has a lot to "sell" with regard to the success of Thomas and Mendenhall in the league. It's also a nice selling point about where both Mendenhall and LeShoure landed in the draft. Those points definite cannot be disputed.

I would just argue that Iowa has A LOT to offer to a prospective RB too.

- Albert Young many not have had tremendous success YET in the NFL ... however, he's still been able to consistently cash a NFL check. Furthermore, Young was an absolutely tremendous college football player. Were it not for so many leg/knee injuries ... I'd bet that AY's NFL career would be at higher heights today. However, as it is, Young still has a chance to "take off" ... he just will need to take advantage of all the opportunities he gets. It's kinda tough now considering that he's behind Peterson.

- Shonn Greene ... both his college and NFL success already are able to speak for themselves.

- Ladell Betts has already had a long NFL career and a reasonably productive one too. He was a great college player ... and he continues to cash a NFL paycheck.

- Since '08, Iowa's OL continues to be where it should be. It plays at a higher level than most other units in the nation ... and it does so pretty consistently. Furthermore, the group is manned with the personnel to remain ELITE through the coming years too. It's nice for a RB to know that he's having future NFLers blocking for him.

- I'm also willing to bet that the fact that Iowa's current RB, Marcus Coker, feels like a kid in a candy-store won't hurt either. Coker absolutely loves it at Iowa and his enthusiasm will invariably rub off on RB recruits who visit.

- Lester Erb has done a truly remarkable job "coaching up" Iowa's exceptionally young and inexperienced RBs. Iowa has been stuck having freshman starters in each of the past 2 years ... and those young starters have really done a pretty impressive job all things considered. I really think that that reflects well on both Iowa's OL and Erb's coaching.

- The fact that Coe wasn't eligible immediately implies that Iowa won't have a really big-name recruit on the roster at RB. Often, when you have such a big-name guy ... that can sometimes scare off recruits in following classes. Given that Coe currently isn't "on board" at Iowa ... that likely will probably provide the perception that Iowa has plenty of opportunity to offer. I'm pretty convinced that Coker and McCall will do a tremendous job of manning Iowa's RB spots ... however, currently, Coker is the ONLY guy Iowa has with any legit experience.

looking at it at face value, illinois does seem like a top choice for a RB recruit much like Iowa to O-Linemen. But when you break it down like homer it seems like it stops there, whereas when you break down iowas coaching staff it is oozing with continuity, thats how i viewed the discussion.

in a way we are all alright

Back to the original topic... the scuttlebutt down here is several things are at work for the timing of the firing of Butch Davis.

Davis still had the support of Chancellor Holden Thorpe, AD Baddour and a number of others throughout last season and into the summer. Carolina is in the midst of an-going fund raising campaign for the new Club seats and suites, etc in the Northern end zone that will be ready for this season. The economy is down and they didn't want to pull the plug after they claimed that they supported him.

Earlier in July a law suit was filed by one of the players, Mike Mcaddo (sp?)suing the NCAA and UNC for his dismissal from the team for academic fraud. In the hearing that was held it came out that Mcaddo had obviously plagiarized a paper even though UNC had continued to back him, at first, and then get rid of him.

UNC is very, very sensitive about their academic reputation and doing it "the Carolina Way"

The new Board of Trustees met for the first time this week and Thorpe had had enough and fired him.. but he fired him after the good portion of season tickets had been sold, after Media days, after summer sessions, with most freshman football kids already on campus, and still with a week for the DC Whithers to be appointed interim head coach.

They will lose few to none of this years class, have a huge head start on hiring the next AD and Head Coach and still NOT sabotage next year's class.

Everyone was screaming that it was terrible timing, I disagree. Holden Thorpe is a very smart man and it was a perfect time to fire him.
