Sokol is different because he is JUCO and only has two years to play. You burn his redshirt after the halfway point of the season then you just wasted an entire year. That is why Sokol sits.

THe only way Sokol was going to play this year was if JVB got seriously hurt early in the season.
Was talking with Podolak on Saturday night on Soundoff and brought up whether he thought at this point it would be good to get Rudock some snaps. He doesn't think so. Given the condition of the OL, he would most likely struggle and potentially severely struggle. Podolak didn't see much upside in playing him in those conditions. At this point, I tend to agree.
But as far as the other kids playing, Kirk had this paradigm change about six years ago...felt like getting some true frosh out there would help accelerate their learning curve.

never burn redshirts this late in the year unless it's 110% necessary. Being that Iowa is staying home this offseason, it's unnecessary. The time to burn shirts is under halfway through the season and ONLY if there is a pressing need at that position........for instance your starting HB is banged up and at 65% effectiveness, the backup is out, and the 3rd team guy is the punter.
this has puzzled me as well, CJF could have used a RS just like Hamilton could have used 1
even Ott had his RS burned 2 games ago, its the burning of RS's , not playing a RSFR QB confuses me
the not burning a RS of a QB makes sense as there ussually just 1 QB that plays and most teams have 1 per year class available if a injury occurrs, Iowa needs Sokol and Beathard to keep their RS on to establish this

And JVB isn't struggling? The upside is he might play better than JVB and that could be valuable for next year, not sure the offense could get more stagnant than it already is.

In cases that the OP was talking about, KF leaves the final decision up to the player.
If they dont want to burn it, he doesnt make them.

people used to complain KF didn't play enough FR now they complain for not saving them....
RS used to be a luxury for coaches. Now it's a way to sell PT to recruits. Also, look at the number of transfers out of programs and more often than not, it's because of not playing. As Jon, said it speeds the learning curve.

I noticed him out there a little, but not a lot. Not that I was going out of my way to notice.

My God, are QB's so fragile we have to worry about their confidence instead of planning for the future. The last 2 games are meaningless. Let's see what these kids can do. Next year we start over playing games that matter. Why waste that time getting these kids game experience.
