Bump: NFL terrible officiating

I couldnt find my original thread on this topic from a couple of months ago. After yesterday's NFL games I bring it up again that maybe college refs and college ball are not so bad.

Again we see crucial bad calls or non-calls in the biggest sport in the US and maybe in the world dollarwise. Refs totally missing obvious stuff and also making calls because the assume they see stuff.

I no not follow either the Rams since they moved or the Saints but I was pulling for the Rams for Blythe and because it has been longer since they won the SBowl. But that non-call PI/helmet to a defenseless receiver might be one of the worst officiating blunders I have ever seen. The side judge and back judge as well as a head linesman had to be in a position to make that call. How can they not see a defender run head first into a receiver well well before the ball gets there and not call something, anything. Now the Saints my not have got a TD after a correct PI being called but they could have run more time of the clock.

The pseudo-roughing the Brady call in the chiefs game was really bad also, a crucial penalty that let the Pats extend a drive for a TD. That was really bad as the ref must have assumed they saw something whereas the defender hit Brady in his left shoulder pad and not the facemask or helmet. I am a big Chiefs fans and I thought this was bad. But the Chiefs did themselves no favors by totally wasting the first qtr on offense and defense (except for a big INT to save a 2nd Pats TD). The Chiefs could not get a pass rush so their pass defenders were doing a lot of illegal hitting (most teams do) and not getting called. Did Hogan really catch that pass (looked like the ball rolled around on the turf for a bit, and looked like that bouncing punt did touch Edelman and certainly there wasnt proof to overrule the on field call although two plays later the Chiefs got a pick)

Not sure what the NFL can do. But I would start with a last 5 minutes of the game where the booth can review or overrule anything on the field, for example, the booth could have stopped play and called a foul on the Rams Dback.

The NFL needs to modify the pushing and shoving by receivers and dbacks and let them push and shove, but no holding or grabbing of uniforms or players at all, let them push and shove as long as it isnt a blow type personal foul or until the ball is in the air. They push and shove all game and it is hardly called because to do so would totally slow down the game.

And I think they might have to look at replay for every late hit/roughing the passer because I have seen some really bad calls on this aspect of officiating.

Officiating is bad in college, but blatantly crooked in the NFL.

For some reason...despite the proven cheating and Belichick’s open disdain for league management...the NFL loves the Patriots/Brady. Between the Saints, Rams, and Chiefs the only team capable of beating the Patriots is the Saints. So guess which team the officials made sure lost yesterday? Yep...the Saints. Coincidence? I think not.

The NFL has set it up so that Brady can retire as Super Bowl champion. Whether he will or not, I don’t know. Personally I think he is too full of himself and will keep playing.

The NFL has become the equivalent of professional wrestling. Each year I watch less and less. I will not be watching the Super Bowl. I just don’t care anymore.

I call ‘em like I see ‘em.

I think the Rams have a shot to beat the Patriots (actually started out being favored, didn't they?). Anyway, I would go with the Boston - LA markets into the Super Bowl (just like the most recent World Series) over New Orleans and Kansas City markets. :)

The missed PI/helmet to helmet was probably the worst non-call I've seen. Certainly in a playoff game.

But I don't feel bad for the Saints. The refs also missed a fasemask on Goff that would have given the Rams a 1st & Goal at the 1 on the previous drive. Those two cancelled each other out in my mind but the PI was much more obvious. That crew did horrible job and the NFL will take private action against them in terms of assignments for future games, particularly in the playoffs. Those refs are graded.

Overall the NFL is far better off with officials than college football. Those guys aren't even full time officials. They have regular jobs.

I actually think the rams have a better shot at beating the Patriots than the Saints did.
Feel bad for Drew Brees tho, probably just watched his last shot at a title taken away from him

Cool story, breh, but the other angle shows that his hand was several inches over from the ball at that moment.
Are you thinking of the right thumb? The straight on and other side angle shows it was not close to it, like Tony Romeo thought. No angle shows the left thumb didn't get hit by it. In fact, pictures and slo mo show that it did hit it.

Look, bud, I'm sorry that you're a Chiefs fan, but the ball hit like 4 inches away from the left hand and unless the guy has an inspector gadget style left thumb, that ball did not touch it. The booth got that one right.

Still not convinced I'm right or wrong, just something to look at. It doesn't matter either way, because of the INT. One think that I do know is that I effin' HATE the Chefs and Pats. Go Rams...I guess.

Looked to me like the ball hit his left pointer finger from every angle I saw.

I hate St. Louis, but I really hate what the Rams did to them so I can't cheer for them. They got out of that stadium deal because the Edward Jones Dome fell to like 9th on the amenities list due to a stadium construction boom and the people of that town took a total bath on PSLs and tax hits for the stadium. I don't really care who wins the Super Bowl.

Aaron Donald was held about 20 times during the game, pretty obvious, call it.

Face mask, Goff, 2-3 others.

On replay the non-call was a miss. At normal speed, with the play coming towards the official, I can see why he didn't make the call. Was it clear enough to make the call that would decide the title game?

Idiot call by New Orleans to even call a pass play, especially an out pattern. They needed to run it, run the clock out, run the Rams time outs out, and kick a field goal, or perhaps get a TD. Inexcusable.

NO coach was rightly upset about official not following the clear rules on pass interference. However, not long ago, coach, you told your players to target others players to try to hurt them and pay them back. You were suspended for a year. Remember that? Look in the mirror bro. Worried about the helmet to helmet hit on your guy? What about planned targeting? Things tend to even out and come back to bite.

Saints also had chances after the poor call. They had the damn ball first in overtime and threw it up for grabs after a great Rams defensive play. Rams made it happen.

Plus, you don't often win when you have two chances to score early, easily, and end up with field goals.

Plus the Rams shut down your running game and your big play receiver Michael Thompson.

Lots more complicated that one "bad no call."

You had a bad call but were outplayed, sorry, life isn't fair.
