Bullies of the Big 10 Again

“We’re sending a message to the Big Ten,â€￾ said cornerback Desmond King, who added two more interceptions to raise his season total to five. “We want to let them know the bullies of the Big Ten are back. That’s what Iowa was known for back then. We’re just trying to bring that back.â€￾

Love hearing that from Desmond King, who has proven he can back-it-up.

I'm not sure how I feel about that statement. I know they played lights out yesterday, but the defensive unit that earned that nickname a few years back was ridiculously talented.

I'm not bashing the defensive showing this year - they're doing great. But the original bullies team scared the crap out of the opponent before they even set foot on the field.

Can anyone list all the names of the original Bullies of the Big Ten?

King is right. The front 7 on D is nasty and so is the offensive line. Even Iowa's secondary on defense will come up
and stick someone. This team plays with the nastiness we haven't seen from Iowa in awhile.

Hawkeye fan my whole life and I coach 3rd grade tackle football here in the Twin Cities. I tell my players to watch and learn from Mabin and King how they come up and support the run and keep that contain. Our corners have always done a good job supporting the run but these two are special in both aspects. The one thing I am concerned with is keeping King healthy with his work on special teams. This is where they should be getting guys like Wadley and Mitchell more work. Does King need to return kickoffs? I am not complaining about his performance but he is much more valuable as a corner than as a kickoff return guy. I would keep him on punts for now as I don't know who else we have besides McCarron.

I like the attitude of King and his comment about the "Bullies" but right now we have no one that is comparable to the the talent of anyone on the front seven of those guys. I wish we had another Matt Roth, Howard Hodges and Hodge in the middle, but we don't, I like the team defense the guys are playing and it seems like the entire team has a different vibe right now. I hope they keep it rolling because it has been fun to watch so far.

We're not quite there yet, but I love the fact that it's obviously something the team is striving for. Attitude...it's showing.

Honestly, for now, I'd settle for being A bully of the B1G.

King, that guy is legit.

It's only valid if opposing players start calling them that again. Great attitude to have, but the reputation has to be earned.

Yep Sanders led with his helmet most tackles and Hodge was king of the horse collar.

Ill always remember Matt Roth just destroying Purdues punter who had no idea it was coming after a block.

You'd probably get suspended for something like that now.

This.

This year's unit is playing well. But it is a far cry from the Iowa defenses who earned that nickname. As you say, opposing teams had wet streaks down their legs simply taking the field for pre-game warm ups and realizing soon they would be meeting face mask-to-face mask those big uglies from Iowa City.

To soon to tell....but at 5-0 and playing with attitude, these guys are showing they are a very good defensive unit....they are playing with pride on every series, and their stats are starting to back that up....

...the O needs to gear up a bit and get those 1st downs when needed, to keep the D from being so gased! We shall see, we shall see!

I agree, but I think it starts with the attitude so I'm not bothered by the comment one bit. I like it. They dominated in their first B10 game. That has to give them confidence heading into the rest.

Ott
Meier
J. Johnson
King
Mabin

Those guys have all earned it in my opinion. The LB's are playing well. Lomax/Taylor have been pretty consistent. If they keep improving as the season progresses look out. Like I said, it all starts with the attitude. I love how word came out that they kept telling each other on the sideline "They don't win if they don't score". Great mentality.

I really appreciate King's use of the German suplex to finish off tackles. I haven't seen that since Matt Roth used to do it.
