Bubble Talk

Iowa is IN right now. But there is a lot of basketball between now and Sunday. These are the last 17 IN as of today in order of best chance to least. They are are safe with a win, on the hot seat with a loss.

Iowa's hopes for dancing?

Certainly hope not...

I think we are in, but it would sure be nice to win at least one game in the BTT. It would help the mental attitude of this team immensely. I think they are going to come out and play hard on both ends. Fran is going through a very tough time right now with his son; I think the Hawkeye players step up and play hard for him

What seeds do you consider the bubble?

I think Iowa was most definitely a bubble team in 2004-05 when they got a 10 seed (against Cincinnati). That team was 4-9 in the Big Ten before winning their last three to finish 7-9, and they beat Purdue & MSU in the BTT.

So I'd say bubble teams could definitely land as 10 seeds, but am not as sure about 8 or 9's.

Probably around 10-12 seeds would be the bubble I would say. The 10 seeds on the bubble are really weak 10 seeds, of which Iowa is not. Teams like Nebraska, Xavier, Colorado are bubble teams who should get in but not a certainty.

This sounds about right to me. 13-16 seeds usually seem to go to mid-major conference tournament winners, and I think are basically 1-bid leagues. The only power conference team I can recall getting a 13 was Georgia a few years ago when they won the SEC Tournament, and were well under the bubble going in.

Georgia was actually a 14 which has to be the lowest seed a team from a major conference has ever had. I remember rooting for them in the SEC tournament just because I was so curious as to what their seed would be in the NCAA tournament. Also, I wonder if it's possible for a major conference team to be a 16 seed. Like if TCU won the Big 12 tournament what would their seed be?

I think you're right. Thanks for pointing that out. I do think Penn State got a 13 one year back in the 1990's IIRC, soon after they joined the Big Ten. But power conference teams are typically 12 or better from what I've seen.

Interesting question about a team like TCU. It would be cool to see something like that happen, but we'll probably never see it.

Yeah, I bet they would put a team like TCU as a 12 seed First Four game or something. Would be pretty funny to see. Running the table in the big 12 tournament would mean you beat a few highly ranked teams though.

There are 32 Automatic Births. Anywhere from 6-10 will be taken by teams that are already "IN". That means there will be anywhere from 42-46 at large bids. Divide that by 4 seeds and the 10-12 seeds could be some of the last teams in the dance.

If there are 22 bids taken by teams that wouldn't make it at large, those would fill all the 12-16 seeds, leaving the other 10 autos and the 36 at-larges at 11 seed or better.
