Bruce Pearl & Tennessee Being Investigated

There is no way to sugar-coat this for Pearl. He cheated, then lied about it to the NCAA who had photo evidence in hand when they questioned Pearl. As the column by Doyle indicated, Pearl is smarter than this. If they ask a specific question about a specific incident, he has to know they have evidence and he could never skirt by lying. Aaron Craft is going to OSU now,and Pearl is screwed. He knew that entertaining juniors in his home was a huge no-no,and he did it anyway.

I always liked Pearl and thought he was a brilliant recruiter/entertainer, but this smacks of hubris. I think he bought his own press clippings and was bigger than the NCAA rules. No doubt there is intense pressure on him to maintain the high level of play he established at Tenn, but he should have kept his bearings, and he did not.

Selby ends up at KU. Craft at OSU...in the end, I do not see that the rules he broke helped him,and more likely will cost him his job. Rarely do coaches survive this type of transgression.

The thing that really rubbed me wrong is that when questioned why he was coming forward at this point, he said, "His conscience made him do it." What a crock! The photos made him do it.

Even before this, the word in the mid-south is that these guys are falling flat with recruiting this very, very rich recruiting ground.

The NCAA does not like it when subjects lie to their investigators. I expect the hammer will fall hard, whenever that happens. I don't think anything the university has done pre-emptively will lessen that blow.

This is serious for Pearl.

Drew also is in trouble at Baylor.

It's funny that three of the coaches that had good support on the boards for the Iowa job are in trouble with the NCAA. Of note, Steve Forbes was the most severly reprimanded of the three assistants. All three had their pay cut by twenty-five percent. However, Forbes was prohibited from off campus recruiting for one year. The other two assistants, Jones & Shay, are only prohibited from off campus recruiting for nine and three months, respectively.

yes, it is funny how that works. The successful recruiters are the guys we all want to hire...me included. But, it sometimes turns out there is a reason these guys are so successful in recruiting....and Iowa does not want to get involved with that...nor do I.

It always seemed very funny to me that Baylor would be getting such good recruits....I guess sometimes the easy answer is the correct answer..

Yep. I never wanted Pearl for Iowa. But I admit to joining the bandwagon for Forbes and Drew. Thank God that didn't work out. I wonder how long it will take before Martin from KSU is in trouble as well.

I guess what steams me is that even if these coaches get caught, woop-dee-doo. They STILL ended up with the best players, which makes it tough for programs playing it straight to compete. In other words, the cheaters get the top players, and other honest programs do NOT get those players because of it.

How do you compete with a bunch of cheaters?

It makes me wonder if stuff like this goes on at schools like Duke, UCLA, UNC, etc. or if their coaches are just that good.. Who knows.

Looks like Uconn might be in hot water too:

So, apparently recruting violations run rampant in college sports.

sports.

The thing is UT didn't end up with the best players. Memphis is an amazing bed of high school BBall talent and UT has not fared well getting this top talent. Pretty much the running joke down here.
