Brian Ferentz OL Coach and Levar Woods LB Coach

If his last name wasn't Ferentz, you wouldn't be saying this.

Bad idea to make someone head coach because of who his dad is. I shudder to think of the Iowa BB program had Keno Davis been named coach...which is what a lot of people on this board wanted.

same to you sir. take his resume as a whole and what one of(if not the best) coach in football has to say about him, you can't tell me you wouldnt' want that coach on staff

I understand where people are coming from with what they are saying but...if his last name wadn't Ferentz, nobody here would have been clamoring for him to be a coach at Iowa. There are other "up and coming" young coaches out there, but I don't recall anyone wanting them (unless they were a former Iowa player....as if that was a qualification for the job).

The Patriot's Scout site makes no mention of Brian leaving, nor did anyone make a post about it in the forum....so I doubt he is as highly regarded as some Hawk fans think.

Still....I think it is a good hire and he will do well. A little youthful exuberance is what the Iowa program needs (same goes for hiring Woods).

Great stepping stone for BF to succeed then become head coach of a mid major or an OC. With this experience and no sooner can he become a B10 head coach. By 2020 this is certainly attainable, hopefully we get the nasty back in our OL. Like both hires GO Hawks!

i have said it before. at some point bf will be up for the job as hc and i believe lw would be his dc. before that happens i see parker leaving as a hc and soup leaving as a hc at other colleges. i believe kf will coach past his current contract and hand off the reins to his son. dont compare it to tom and keno because keno only coached under daddy. bf played for a little bit in the pros, coached in the pros and was very well respected there at a young age.

soup, parker, ferentz, woods are going to show that kf has a good coaching lineage. not as large as hayden, but be honest no other coach i know of has the lineage of hayden in football. i dont even think the greats like bryant, paterno, etc. have created as many good to great head coaches as hayden.

Whoa, slow the carriage down here.

I've been a huge supporter of Soup from the start, but to credit Ferentz with him as part of his coaching lineage isn't totally fair. Soup was a very well established D1 coach that has his foundation planted firmly in Michigan tradition and originally came up under Lloyd Carr (technically hired when Moeller was there maybe, but it was during the transition).

KF did a fantastic job jumping on the opportunity to bring him in and that's where the credit ends. Soup has arguably added more to this program than he has taken from it.

Also, I am not sure Soup wants the limelight of being a HC. This is purely speculation, but he was pretty content with his role in Ann Arbor for 13 years. He wore the Asst. Head Coach title there for quite a few as well. He's well respected, but he didn't jump into a lower level HC position when he left Michigan, and he didn't jump into an OC position anywhere. He came to Iowa and seems extremely happy with his role under KF, where he was probably well aware of the fact that Kirk could be here a very, very long time. So, there is a case to be made that he may be perfectly content not climbing the coaching ladder.

Time will tell. On the surface these are both great hires. When the time comes to replace Kirk..I am certain the AD will look at the Iowa staff before he looks anywhere else and at least consider what he's got right here. If they need to go outside...they certainly will.
