Breaking Down Iowa's Man-To-Man Zone Defense.

Discussion how the zone has really changed in basketball. Iowa seems to effectively play the zone but it isn't your grandfather's zone from back in the day.

It's kind of like man-to-man to a point in particular areas as defenders can't afford to leave any space on shooters, with the number of players that can shoot the perimeter ball, and how well they can shoot. Back in the day, players in a zone would have their hands to the lights and shift as the ball was passed around. The two ways to beat it would be to get the ball to the flasher on the baseline or a player at the top of the FT line, depending on the zone.

Now as offenses have progressed and there is more spacing on offenses, dribble penetration can be used to break it down, along with passing and moving players. So, some teams are using motion O against zones which is kind of funny. So, now you have players in zones still responsible for certain areas, but when a player is in their zone or with the ball, man-to-man principles are applied. It really is an interesting concept in today's game.

Discussion?
