Brandstad v. Culver

Either that or we simply neuter everyone without a college education so they cannot have children. not a good option.

My dad doesn't have a college education and he's been quite successful. I have friends that don't have college degrees and they are successful too. This is an absurd comment! Younger education is good but my guess is a lot of people use it as free day care. I'd also like to know how easy it is to receive it for free. My guess is that there are a lot of people abusing the system...just like every government handout system.

I don't have a college education and I've been successfull. Some people just are not going to be successfull, I am sure you went to high school with some students that just wwill not be financially successful no matter what. Do we punish thier children, or not let them have children. As with any program there will be abuses, I will give you that.

culver is a turd

too young to have an opinion of Branstad while in office, I think this is a good basis ... on one hand I have my Union-man Democrat Dad, who calls him Terry "Braindead"; on the other hand is my politically connected Republican Uncle, who also calls him Terry "Braindead"

I'm voting for Eric Cooper, Libertatian
not perfect, but by far the least of the evils

culver is a turd, and branstad is a ******. Its the classic turd sandwich vs. giant ****** debate.

Your power must be fading.

Everything is proceeding according to my design. It was I who allowed Culver to be elected, and it is I who will allow Branstad to be re-elected. After both of these fools have driven this state into fiscal insolvency, expanded gambling, smoking bans, cats and dogs living together, then the people will cry out for a new leader... me.

And BVP will be my lieutenant governor.

Together, BVP and I will rule the galaxy! err.... state.

that's why deadbeat parents should be sending their kids to preschool on their own dime ... we are, and we ain't rich

So let's assume you are referring to a family in poverty. They don't send their kid to preschool. The kid goes to kindergarten with a developmental lapse as compared to peers. The school (our tax money) is going to have to spend an astronamical amount of money to catch the kid up. Eventually the kid ends up in special ed. now the kid is in a classroom with a 1 to 5 student to teacher ratio.

4 year old preschool will save school districts (thus tax payers) a lot of money in long run by reducing the amount of remediation/special ed schools have to pay for.

It is a very wise investment that will pay for itself several times over. If you can't admit that then you are basically saying that you are so tied to a party affiliation that you refuse logic. For example, what were the republicans response to Culvers gun owners rights expansions, there should be some praise there, that was right in line with your party.

A college education is an avenue to higher paying jobs, obviously. There are plenty of jobs that don't require one, but in general you are talking about the exceptions not the norm.

Wow CRwrestling...I hate to put people out, but maybe the parents could help their kids a little. I know, I know, that's the schools job, but maybe just enough to keep them out of special ed. And I can't get excited about the gov race...would support Branstad if Doug Gross wan't involved with his campaign.

Culver vs. Branstad is just about as exciting as Grassley vs. whatever-loser-won-the-primary.

Somebody once said that you deserve the people you elect. We must have done something really bad along the way to get these people for leaders. Good gracious.

At least we're not Louisiana--that place has some bad karma going on.

Can someone be called an idiot for posting about the Iowa Governor's race on a football message board, or would I be breaking the rules? There is a Politics board, you know.

yeah, 'free' preschool. let's add to the debt by more social programming.

did you actually say that if you don't send your kid to preschool that special ed classes will increase enrollment? riiiggghhhtttt.....

i've sent two of my kids to preschool, and have two more that could go. I've already told my wife to skip preschool and go right to KG. hope he doesn't end up in special ed......

some legacy the butterburger will leave.

We are doomed not matter which way you vote. Brandstad spoke at my High School graduation in 96 and none of us had a clue what the hell he was talking about and i'm pretty sure he didn't either.

The cost of providing preschool is so minute compared with the relative gains in education it is a very positive investment. And yes, students in primary grades who are behind grade level and require remediation are very expensive to teach. If they get beyond the primary grades still with a deficit it gets even more expensive and less likely they reach proficient at any point in their schooling. Preschool is an obvious, economically sound, proven method of ensuring all students have an opportunity to succeed in some of the most crucial years. Congrats on your kids, glad to hear they are doing well and getting the quality upbringing that will contruibute to strong language and cognitive development. Many are not.

to those who are not getting the quality upbringing, preschool won't make a damn bit of difference. Its starts at home, and ends at home. no 3 hour a day program will change that.

please figure out a way for me not to have to pay for other people's kids. Or maybe I have that the wrong way - maybe I should figure out how to get my 4 on the dole.

look, I'm all about helping kids in need, but cost shifting is not the way to get 'er done. too many give a ways. how about this: let's talk about what you are willing to take away in order to be able to provide free preschool.

That's what has to start happening in Federal and State Governments Imported...cut spending in one area to spend in another. I know this unemployment extension debate sucks for a lot of innocent people that have been hit by this economy, but I think it's an important battle to wage right now. Hopefully they will end up having the guts to find the $30 or so billion to cut from other parts of the budget so these people can get the extra help. And hopefully we will all understand if some of these cuts effects us.
