Brands on Beatty and 157...

What are people's opinions or preferences regarding 157? Who do you think will end up going?

Cane and USFA im interested on what you think he should do since you dont agree with what he is doing.

Wrestleoff?

im sure the wrestlers know whats going on with the situation and we can't judge looking in

if they don't know then i could see where it could be bad

He is the best coach in the nation, but I do not like the way he is handling the 157 situation.
I agree; I think we need to look at how frustrating it is for these guys not knowing if they are going to go or not and how it might effect their performance during the tournaments. Or maybe we can tell these guys to suck it up like some were saying about Marion when 141 was unsettled.

Wrestling is different because it is not a judgement call. In football if you are deciding between two lineman, it is the coach's call on who he thinks is better. In wrestling, you wrestle off to see who is better. It is done on my junior high team, it was done when I was in high school, that is the way it should be.

This is my view, he does not want them to wrestle off because when they wrestle in practice, one beats the other. He does not want the winner to be in the spot either due to overall effort in practice or attitude, but he cant come right out and state who is going to be there because one might quit or not give effort in practice. This way both are going at it hard in practice because they want the spot. He wants no complacency from either going into big tens.

If you base it strictly off of records, especially Big 10 records, then Jansen is the clear cut choice. 12-4 (4-0) vs. 9-7 (2-2). Just saying...

you cant do it that way either because AJ didnt wrestle Schlatter of Salzar 2 of the top three in the Big Ten and Kerr did wrestle them and yes lost. Im not sure that if AJ would of wrestle those two that he would of won so that wont work either.

What about differing styles and match ups. I'm sure that has had something to do with who gets thrown out on the mat.

The one time I've seen AJ, he appeared to be a much better wrestler with a lot more potential than Kerr. Kerr would drive me nuts in meets, if I was the coach.

I have a hard time believing that there is much complacency in the Iowa room regardless of who's going to be wrestling. From my understanding...it takes a different type of man to hang in that room and by the time you've been in there for a while you're not about to pack it in because of something like this.

Kerr might work harder, do better in the classroom, have a better attitude, has bought into the program, shows up when he is suppose to, put in extra effort, etc, etc, etc. We do not know the specifics, all I can say is that it should be a best of 3 wrestle off, that way someone has to beat the other one twice. Maybe brands is worried about injury in the wrestle off and he is hesitant on it. No one knows, i just wish it was handled in a different way. Again, they are the BEST coaches in the country and they know what they are doing. I would handle it differently but I am not in the room, I have not put in the time they have and I do not have their knowledge base in regards to wrestling or with these kids, they will make the best decision they feel possible.

First off I can tell you that both of these wrestlers are frustrated with what is going on and Brands alluded to that much after the tOSU dual. After talking with both you could definitely get a sense that this whole thing was wearing on them as they were frustrated. Janssen has won multiple wrestle off this year and also has the better record, the only thing Kerr has going for him is a win over Cyler Sanderson. Both have been inconsistent at times, but I think Janssen has been the most steady. Swapping them out, playing games like pulling names out of a hat has to have some type of effect. Maybe Tom is doing this as a test and maybe it will turn out for the best in the long run, but it has also hurt both wrestlers in the polls which do mean something now. Being in the room pretty often I can tell you that both work their butts off, both are great kids off the mat and both want the spot bad. This is why Tom is the coach and I'm not, I don't like the situation, but again it's not up to me and I trust Tom's judgement.

Division I wrestling is a bit different from high school and junior high wrestling. I am fine with the decision that a wrestle-off is not the way to go. I think there are multiple reasons why a wrestle-off would be inadvisable.

I watched both Janssen and Kerr wrestle at Midlands. I liked Janssen better, but Kerr went further in the tournament, however I read somewhere that Janssen was recovering from an injury during the tournament which may have been a factor.

Janssen got on my bad side after the Okie State dual where he seemed so ineffective.

Since then Janssen has done better, but I must admit that I prefer Kerr. Yes, I agree that his style of wrestling can be a bit frustrating to watch, but then some other wrestlers are like that and they win.

In the end, I will be happy with either Janssen or Kerr representing the University of Iowa at the Big 10s and the NCAAs. I think they are equally deserving. I also trust the Hawkeye coaching staff to make the decision they believe is the correct one. Also whichever of them ends up sitting out the post-season, I will feel bad for because I'm certain that both of them are capable and that they believe themselves to be capable of winning. That being said, I do not feel sorry for them right now because each has brought this frustration upon himself.

There will be a question of "what-if" no matter the result at both post-season tournaments. It's unfortunate, but both of them have had opportunities to prove themselves as the guy at 157 and neither has made a strong case.

If nothing else it is an interesting topic to ponder until the Big10s arrive.
