Brandon Simon Transferring

No bueno. Hopefully Waggoner is developing nicely, and maybe Karchinski comes in ready to contribute some? If his listed measurements are accurate, he's already got decent size.

Just remembered, wasn't the older Kallenberger making some waves at DE before he got hurt? I know he was pretty productive in JUCO.

Seems like odd timing with the depth at the position but maybe he didn’t see a path to the playing time he wanted.

I would not be surprised to see a LB move up to the edge and get a look in the spring.
Is it possible that the coaching staff is telling these kids that there's not going to be playing time and their best chance at playing time would be to transfer?

Sure. But that would seem less likely at a position without much depth.

Unless we have some 4 and 5 stars lined up and need open scholarships. ;)

Actually I was just thinking in general with several kids transferring. Even without depth, if these kids are not good enough, then they're just not.

With Linderbaum switching to center, either there's depth there that we don't see yet, Brandon's just not good enough, or this transfer is out of the blue.

Any chance Brady Reiff can play some end on non passing downs? Seems to me he was a little undersized at tackle and seemed like more of a finesse rusher than power rusher.

We as fans tend to view these kids as only football players, but they do have personel lives too. His decision to transfer may have been football related, or there could be a dozen other reasons for him leaving.

If this kid is an out of the area product, this has been a very common occurrence under this regime. Not saying it falls directly at their feet. No clue. Might be a sign of the times

You have to admit, if you saw Simon playing meaningful time... there would be trouble.

Absolutely. Being from NJ, he could most certainly want/need to be closer to home, etc.

Damn, I hope Kirk didn't scribble the wrong name down on his thigh notebook. "It would probably best for you if you transfer, no, wait, what is your name?"

He came in as a DE, so it’s possible. The problem is that leaves them short at DT with M Nelson and Brincks graduating, Jansen leaving as a grad transfer and Linderbaum moving to center. Might depend on how things look in the spring with Nixon and Shannon.

Simon got some buzz when he first got here but then we did hear from him. Romeo McKnight benefitted by dropping down a level. Maybe the same happens for Brandon.

Just brainstorming. Hopefully we can get AJE and Golston some breathers throughout the game so they can be effective pass rushers.

Inside (Lattimore, Nixon, Reiff, Shannon)
Outside (AJE, Golston, Reiff, Waggoner)

If we somehow got the Rice kid, Reiff sliding out for running downs would make some more sense. We have some options but either way we aren’t going to be as deep as we were this season.

Not every single kid transferring is due to PT necessarily either.. Closer to home school work.. Combination of a lot of things could be why. He seemed to have a path to be the 3rd or 4th DE this year which would provide a lot of PT but who knows..

Jeez. Are we even going to be able to fill a roster next year?

No worries buddy. I've been told over and over again the the early entries the last 2 years only helps Iowa's recruiting. We should be seeing their replacements sign LOI here at the next signing period.
