So this weekend I started to watch a few Hawkeye football videos on YouTube from this past season. As I'm sure many of you know you can easily get sucked into that site and start watching tons of other videos. I eventually came across one featuring Brad Banks and that amazing 2002 season and watched with delight as Banks continuosly guided the team into the endzone.

Brad Banks was a great dual threat quarterback and when I compare him to most of the recent QB's that have either played or been recruited by Iowa I started to wonder why we don't recruit more hybrid players like Banks? I love Stanzi and wouldn't want any other QB guiding our team but I was curious why when we had so much success with the type of QB Banks was why we don't try to recruit more players like him?

Iowa's offense isnt really meant for dual threat QBs. They play smashmouth football. I do agree though and wonder why they dont change it up a little bit and some more flair to the offense.

Guys like Banks do not grow on trees. He had the unique combo of gifts that are hard to find. McNutt was supposed to be the next banks, but he was just not as good as Brad. AJ Derby is a fine athlete, who might run more than the average Iowa qb,but I doubt he has the elusiveness of Banks.
Sounds simple...hey,just go get another banks...but the QB position at Iowa is complicated, and takes a few years to figure out, generally.

I think that Iowa does. I just think that the staff is very picky when it comes to QB's whether they are a hybrid QB or not. They look for who is the most accurate QB and great leadership first then whatever else the QB adds are just bonuses. I'm pretty sure McNutt would have been a dual threat QB but the staff found out that Stanzi fit the QB role better and that McNutt can really contribute at WR. They've offered Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones, which are both dual threat QB's, already for the 2011 class.

I had the pleasure of going to all of the 2002 home games, but one(I had tickets to the ISU game, but my buddy got arrested which sucked). Brad Banks has to be considered one of best qb's to ever put on the Iowa uniform. That 2002 season was magical and a Fred Russell injury away from being undefeated and playing Ohio State in the national championship instead of USC. Although Ohio State won it all that year, nobody was going to beat USC. Iowa played there hearts out and one the first half, but ran out of gas. I still believe to this day that if we would have played Ohio State we would have a national championship at Iowa. That Iowa team of 2002 had the best run defense I had ever seen and that was Ohio States speciality. Its a shame we didn't play them that year, in the regular seaon or the NC game.

Probably the best game and loudest game I can remeber being a part of was the 2002 game against Purdue. Banks to Clark for the 95 yard TD! Being down and watch Banks scramble 40+ yards to drive the Hawks into range and the loudest I can remember hearing Kinnick when Banks hit clark on the 4th and 7 for the comeback! That was a special day and I will remember that forever.

Its a shame they came up short, but that 2002 class was the best I had ever seen. Lets hope in 2010 we can get back that Melrose Magic and the Hawks can put togather the greatest season ever, so they can be the best I have ever seen!

Dont forget about Banks spraining his thumb.

Even if we were undefeated we wouldn't have been playing Ohio State for the title. A defending champion Miami team with like a 33 game winning streak was not getting left out of the title game so two Big Ten teams can play each other.

Point taken, but if you look at it like that then you have to consider Iowa beats out Ohio State in the BCS standings and plays Miami in the championship game. Take a look at Ohio State's schedule compared to Iowa's. OSU squicks out wins against Penn State and Michigan at HOME. While Iowa goes on the road in both games and wins in OT at Penn State and crushes Michigan on the road. Iowa's SOS would be better, but it would all come down to the pollsters who would play Miami, OSU or Iowa?

I think Iowa!

I'm not so sure that if Russell had been healthy in the ISU game that we'd have gone undefeated. I still feel to this day that the loss to ISU was the wake-up call that really got the team going. They may not have won against Penn State (when they blew another 24-7 halftime lead), and they may not have pulled out the miracle against Purdue. It's always interesting to play the "what if?" game, but I think in that case it was better for the "big picture" that we lost that game.

The most dominating performance in 2002 was the Michigan game. Just out muscled them in every facet.

you know it's wierd i keep seeing 2002 as the "season" and that is the level--- but IMO, it's 2009--- wow, you want to talk about a magical season,(let's not forget the fact between 02 and 09 and that is we owned the orange bowl in 09---AND! we beat the snots out of ISU--remember they beat us in 02**edit** didnt see previous comments against ISU) no doubt 2002 was magical in it's own right and reading the comments about the banks to clark 95 YD TD run instantly clicked back on and remember just jumping and freaking out--it was even more awesome when i think how my brother and i freaked out and woke up the kids we were screaming so loud when Stanzi hit Mcnutt on the quick slant for the last play TD win against Mich. State---- offensively 2002 was clearly the better team, i argue though 2009 defensively was the better team--- hmmmmm..... i wonder if that means 2010 could be the combo year of 2002 and 2009

anyways, sorry wasn't trying to take anything away from the purpose of this thread, i just find it interesting how i always see comments on here on the 2002 being the team that still has the "bar" if you will!

You beat me to McNutt. Wouldn't AJ fall into this catagory too?

We DO recruit dual-threat QBs, we just don't land many. One recent one we were recruiting very hard, ended up at Illinois: Nathan Seelhause who I believe may be at the top of their depth chart (soph?)

Not exactly. Brad's fumbles (reportedly due to him wrapping his wrist too tight at halftime) cost us the game. Not Freddie's injury.

Anybody remember who some recruiting services rated as the top dual threat QB inthe 2005 class? Um, yeah, that guy.
