Bowl Thoughts

The way I see it, we need MSU to beat PSU...assumption is we lose to OSU and beat MN.

MSU beats PSU Scenario:

BCS - Wisky, OSU
Cap One - MSU - they have to go here because of record.

We then sit with 8-4 with NW...PSU is 7-5.

NW has no shot because of travel #s.

The win vs. PSU and a better overall record is enough to overcome JoePa.

I think we get the Outback...PSU to Gator.

MSU loses to PSU Scenario:

BCS - Wisky, OSU
Cap One - MSU - they have to go here because of record.

We then sit with 8-4 with NW and PSU at 8-4.

NW has no shot because of travel #s.

With equal records...beating PSU is over-shadowed by JoePa.

I think we get the Gator...PSU to Outback.

Thoughts?

I would be thrilled with Gator, Outback or Ticket City. New Year's Day is the best when Iowa is playing on that day!

Insight bowl.
" The Insight Bowl is bigger and better this year with the third pick from the Big 12 Conference and the third or fourth pick from the Big Ten Conference, after the BCS selections.... Annually held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, the Insight Bowl will be televised on ESPN."

Iowa may be the third pick in the Big 10. If they win this week, a loss puts them in one of the other bowls.

Blurb from Gator bowl; "Starting in 2007, the game will feature the third place team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) against a team from either the Big 12, Big East, or Notre Dame as an independent"

Post by Jon on his bowl picks; "My friend Ryan Suchomel of the Iowa City Press Citizen checked with the Big Ten and learned that there is a two-win rule for the Cap One and Outback, but NOT for the Gator or others.. Meaning the Cap One and Outback CANNOT take a team that has two fewer Big Ten wins over another team, but the Gator can"

Iowa is playing for the Outback (maybe Cap-1) this weekend.
Win = legit Jan 1 in Tampa / Orlando. Lose = Gator / Insight.

How in the world did you come up with the second point. If MSU loses then they won't go to the BCS. Wisky and OSU would. MSU to cap one. I also don't know if NW wins another one because they lost Persa for the year. I also think that we would get outback over PSU.

But if Michigan and Penn State finish strong...there are good points to consider.

a) Bowls are a BUSINESS. Business' main goal - 1) make money, 2) sell product (to make more money)

b) IF this might be JoPa's last season, does Outback or Gator bump them ahead of sliding Iowa team? Both travel well, especially in Florida, and they would want to pack them in just in case...especially since Penn State didn;t have high expectations, and Iowa did.

c) Same with Michigan. Not making a bowl for two years and expectations in the gutter, now starting to click as a team? I see them as a potential if we don't wow against OSU and Minny.

Even though we beat both, we are getting progressively worse and they are both hitting their strides/ and would a fanbase as "disappointed" as a majority of Iowa's are with this season find the umph to travel as much as a fanbase who didn't expect to be eligable? Especially two of the winningest programs in CFB history?...We need to be careful. Even if we lose to Ohio State, it depends HOW we lose and how we look as to where we might end up.

I am rooting for Wisky and MSU to win out...if that happens and we beat OSU we are looking at the Cap One Bowl and a great matchup against a team like Bama

Loss will put Iowa in fourth place in Big 10. And out of contention for Insight.

How do you figure? Iowa could very easily go to the Insight bowl with a loss to OSU. Say Wisconsin, MSU and OSU all win out here is what the final standings would be:

Wisconsin 7-1 11-1
Ohio St 7-1 11-1
MSU 7-1 11-1
Iowa 5-3 8-4
PSU 4-4 7-5
Michigan 3-5 7-5
Northwestern 3-5 7-5
Illinois 4-4 6-6 or 7-5 (if they beat Fresno St)

Then where each might go to bowls:
Rose: Wisconsin
BCS at large: OSU
Cap One: MSU

So that means 3 of the remaining 5 will go to the Outback/Gator/Insight. It isn't crazy to think the Outback and Gator would take PSU and Michigan leaving Iowa for the Insight bowl even though they beat both head to head and finished higher.

I don't think there is any way we can get the Cap One...they will not take a 9-3 Iowa team over higher ranked 10-2 OSU team...even if we beat them.

IMO...Wisky, MSU and OSU are locks for BCS, BCS and Cap One.

The question is whether or not we can hold off PSU for the Outback.

*hawkfarmer...you are right, my scenario labels are backwards.

Hawkeye fans should be prepared for Penn State to get picked ahead of Iowa in the Big Ten bowl pecking order, even in the unlikely scenario of Iowa finishing 9-3 and Penn State at 7-5.

A bowl is not going to pass over what is likely to be Joe Paterno's last game as PSU coach. PSU fans will definitely travel well to a bowl game, realizing its probably the finale for Joe.

At best, Iowa will be the fifth Big Ten team selected (after Wisc, OSU, Mich State, and Penn State).

I like our chances of getting the Outback if MSU beats PSU. We have been there and represented well. I know PSU draws well, but our record + beating them gets us the nod over them.

If PSU beats MSU...they will get the Outback nod.

Is it right then that prestige-wise the bowls look like this, this year:

1. Rose
2. CapOne
3. Outback
4. Insight
5. Gator
