Bowl Talk

With the victory over the hated Badgers, Iowa at 6 wins is bowl-eligible and becomes a desirable bowl candidate for the non-playoff bowls.

I also think 4 Big Ten teams are going to make the playoff. If Iowa wins 2 of its next 3 (very possible), they will be 5th in the bowl pecking order.

The top non-playoff bowl games are still the Citrus Bowl and the Outback Bowl.

Citrus won't take Iowa again because we were there last year and in 2021.

I really think it's going to be the Outback against the SEC. College Football News has Iowa v. Mississippi in the Outback. That would be a great match-up.

Que Fry's rant on how dumb bowls are.

The Outback Bowl is a lot of fun. I watched Florida kick the living shit out of us there in 2017.

I am not totally following the pecking order thing. Iowa is currently 5th in the Big Ten. If the season ended today and four teams made it to the playoffs from the conference, wouldn't we be at the top of the pecking order for bowl selection?

Last year there was talk of Ol Miss against Iowa, That would have been a greater disaster than Tennesee.

I hear the fans from Ol Miss are a lot of fun.

I'm still not entirely sold on this whole super-sized conference thing. Seems like there is still going to be three or four standout teams, then a huge muddle in the middle.

An interesting aspect to bowl selections this year is that the Pac 12 teams that went to the Big 12 and B1G still have to honor the Pac 12 bowl contracts until they expire. It could be wild but I'm guessing it will all get worked out behind the scenes and, for the most part, the bowls will get the teams they want.

Another interesting bowl scenario could the 'Rate' Bowl, which used to be the Guaranteed Rate bowl, which used to the Insight Bowl in Phoenix. It is the only matchup between the B1G and Big 12. A couple of the selection rules are that the teams have to have a two win over losses margin meaning 7-5 record at the worst and no regular season rematches so no Iowa vs Iowa St. The game is played at the Diamondbacks baseball stadium now.

I agree that a Florida bowl is likely, assuming we keep winning. But it is fun to speculate if the Hawks did go to the Rate Bowl, who might they play. It appears BYU to the playoffs. i don't know the other Big 12 bowl tie ins. But who would make a good matchup. Arizona St is now bowl eligible and could be a candidate for this game. Colorado, maybe? A Texas school or other eastern school would be possible but I'd guess getting fans in the seasts is a priority. Stay tuned, I guess.

sometimes I think I'd lke a bowl game with one of the B1G teams ...of course that's not going to happen.

hard to figure out power rankings...when teams only play 1/2 the confrerence.

If Iowa wins out and goes 9-3, the Citrus Bowl may not have much choice. Really only 2 choices, Iowa or Illinois

Minn still has to play PSU and Wisc, and they lost to Iowa. They will probably have at least 4 losses.

Mich already has 4 losses and still has to play Indiana and Ohio St.

Neb already has 4 losses and still has to play USC, Wisc and Iowa.

Wisc already has 4 losses and still has to play Oregon, Neb and Minn

ILL could win out and go 9-3., but still has to play a dangerous MSU team. But if ILL does win out, they will probably get the Citrus and Iowa gets the Bowl in Tampa

3 out of 4 years with the same bowl? They will find a way around that. We need some fresh blood on bowl tie ins and opponents. It seems like all we do is bowls in Florida vs the SEC. We are cursed to repeat the same bowls being so consistently right below greatness......

Didn't somebody write a book about this, playing the same team in the same bowl year after year.........Quote the Raven Nevermore

If IA wins out with Sully at QB, is there excitement over this team that wouldn't have been there with Cade heading into the bowl?

I think it's much higher.

Agreed. Was really disappointed when the BTen dropped their assocation with the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. That was a great winter destination, gave us opponents outside the SEC..instead we get they added the Pinstripe Bowl in NYC in winter. Smart.

Good stuff. Thanks for the info, Guffus.

Nebraska coming into Kinnick needing to win to become bowl eligible…that’s my bowl game.:)

Of course if PSU loses to Minn, PSU probably drops out of the 12-team CFP and falls to the Citrus.

Same if Indiana loses to both Mich and Ohio St.
