Bowl Games

I ran across this article and thought I would share it. I personally think there are way to many bowl games. Like the guy states in the article it just doesn't mean much anymore. We made it to a bowl... Well so did everyone else that had a resemblance of a pulse. What bowl you made it to is what really matters. Looks like they are even adding another one next year as well. He does have a nice little insert on what bowl is what now. Who would of thought Bitcoin would even be sponsoring one. One thing I do wish they would do is keep the original bowl name and then just add the sponsor. Example: Gator Bowl Sponsored by TaxSlayer.com. That would be to easy though...

It's the middle of winter, family Holiday travelers 'dropping' in. I'll take as many Bowl games as
I can get.
Kind of like girls in College,; I can't remember all their names, but most of them had some
degree of beauty and assets. Yeah, I'm still glad there are LOTS of bowls.

I think this over-supply can be fixed with 3 changes

BigTen and other P5 conferencs goes to 10 conference games.

BigTen and other P5 pldege to play no more FCS teams and must play at least 1, and preferably 2 P5 teams ooc.

Change requirements for bowl elligibility to 7 wins against FBS opponents.

You make these changes, the big ten probably only has about 4-5 teams out of 14 who go to a bowl.

So this year for example odds are Iowa would have probably finished 6-6 with those schedule requirements, and would have not have gone to a bowl, which sounds about right.

That's exactly not going to happen.

The purpose of having so many bowl games is that so average teams CAN go to a bowl game. Bowls have nothing to do with rewarding successful teams. It has to do with appeasement. Make money at the same time? Priceless.

There are more bowls so that mid-major conferences can send teams to bowls. At least more than a handful. And if one of them pokes their head up with the big boy conferences every now-and-then (read that as Boise State), then they go to a respectable bowl. Worse if they replace a Big5 team in an elite bowl, well, those teams just trickle down the order a little by little.

There are more bowls so that the also-rans in Big5 can make it to bowl season: ya' know the drill, "extra practices, student-athlete experience, reward, money, etc".

Not to hijack the thread, but this a sneaky good weekend for sports. 5 bowl games, 2 NFL games......I have some where to go if Gesell/Olgesby start clanking shots.

In the not so distant future I have a hard time believing the suits in charge are going to keep the coaches, players and fans interest in the bowl system with the new mini-playoff system embedded. This year it already has a little feel of what's the point after the 4 teams. The only motivation is if you have something to prove by being left out (Baylor & TCU) or you have not made a bowl in a while/young team.

The playoff is going to expand to at least 8 and kiss the majority of these bowls goodbye.

Naah, it will become the equivalent to the NIT in basketball. Instead of 38 bowl games you will get 20 to 25 bowl games.

Well, what's the alternative to all those bowls? Shut out the lights in the football complex after black friday?

I like the bowls, gives the kids a kind of end of season reward. We get to see our favorite team play against a team from another part of the country. More exposure. If there are only 4 or 8 teams in the playoff, and Iowa isn't one of them...still good to keep the kids practicing. The alternative is the other 100 teams hang up the cleats and a hand full of teams get more practice.

The bowls are NOT going anywhere. Too much $kin to be made, people show up, people watch, sponsors pay, networks pay, players get a reward and a lifetime memory, coaches get extra practices, and on and on.

I love watching what are usually pretty fair matchups of teams as well.

That would make sense but it's the opposite of what they want. They want crappy teams to go bowling so they can make more money.

I read somewhere that ESPN fully owns 10 or 11 of the bowl games. It
It must be good for their programming.

Yesterday's 5 bowl games, were barely, palatable to watch.
The Las Vegas Bowl, was, somewhat, with Brent Musberger calling the game.

Corporations are slowly realizing the sponsoring a bowl game isn't worth it, unless you are attached to one of the bigger bowl games.
With college football programs going away (UAB, possibly Hawaii and other non-Power 5 conferences teams), we will see fewer bowl games, as there will be under 100 FBS teams, within the next 5 years.

Any game with Brent Musberger calling is absolutely NOT palatable. I'd rather watch junior high football than listen to a game he calls. At his peak he was below average. Nowadays, he's just plain bad.

One thing that I like about bowl games that hasn't been mentioned is generally (once you eliminate the first few days of bowl season) is teams matchup that generally wouldn't schedule each other in the regular season. Despite the fact that no one views the season as a "success" the fact is that we get to see an OOC opponent that may have been better then any other OOC opponent we saw this year.

For me its nothing more than a glorified OOC game, but lets be honest. When else are we going to see LSU, Florida, South Carolina, Missouri, or even Tennessee? If schools were actually scheduling quality OOC opponents I might not care about bowl season, but for the most part its an opportunity to watch teams play that generally wouldn't schedule each other. After being forced to watch multiple games vs. FCS or mid-majors I enjoy an opportunity to watch anyone play a legitimate opponent.

And its better than not having any games on.

I'm guessing you've never heard one of Keith Jackson's broadcasts... Both Musberger and Jackson would be considered 'down to earth' broadcasters. Lead broadcasters that were more color men than lead. Not so much technical football stuff. Both were preminent broadcasters in their 'glory' days (broacasted the games that most of the country cared about). IMO, Musberger is favorable to Jackson. Fum- bulllllllllll.

There's Not an over-supply. You now have 250 cable channels ALL looking for something a little
different than another Dopey, dim-witted, dull oprah/View/Maury like trash, during the day.

Bowl games are like another New girl at the university. Something to check out, might have some
pzzazz, you never know.

Best Season of the Year: BOWL SEASON.
