Bowl Games: Date or Opponent More Important?

When you think of a bowl game, do you rank "prestige" based upon the date it is played or who you play? In my mind, I would rather play a NYD game against a team like S. Carolina (less national status) than the Insight Bowl against a team like Nebby. I just see those non NYD bowl (or obviously BCS) games as "opening band" type of games for the big slate on NYD and later BCS games.

I hear people talk about how they would rather play in the Insight Bowl than the Gator Bowl and just don't get it. Maybe that is just me.

I think its the opponent this year.....no one wants to play South Carolina or Florida again. I think plenty would be interested in a Missouri, Nebraska, Okie State bowl game though.

It is date, and it is not even close. That is why the BigTen negotiated for 22 New Years Day bowls recently.

I would like to play a name school. Mizzo does not do much for me (even with the backing out thing). Okie St, meh (even though they are not chop liver and ranked).

Nebraska: Yes
Florida: Yes (I would like revenge there even though they are down)

South Carolina, kind of meh there too.

Would love a shot at beating Notre Dame even though that will not happen.

Would love to play Alabama, but that will probably not happen as well.

Outside of BCS games, neither. Schools lose money going to the mid tier bowls like Cap 1, Outback, Cotton, etc. I can't even imagine how much they take a hit on low tier bowl games like Insight, Alamo, Holiday, etc.

Today of PTI, Tony K made a great statement about how bowl games are just exibition games with the exception of the NC game.

Craig James went so far as to say bowl games aren't even an accurate assessment of which team is better, saying the more motivated team, not the better team, usually wins.

CFB has such a fantastic regular season. I can't understand why they end it with these bowl games "rewarding" medicore teams and not giving great teams like Stanford, Wisconsin, & TCU a shot to win a championship.

As long as we get a team that doesnt play the spread and embarrass us one last time this season i will be happy

The kids who play on these mediocre teams make a lot of money for some of their schools. Giving them a small perk at the end of the year shouldn't be too much to ask.

Also, allowing for an extra month of practice gets teams ready for the next year.

Most people who make such comments I find don't really have any experience understanding the perspective of the college athlete.

You're correct, I didn't play any sport in college. That being said, the only college athletes that make money for their schools are players on the football and men's basketball teams. All other sports are in the red.

And they do get small perks for the money they make for their schools. They go to school for free. They get their rent paid. They have meal plans.

Really, I'll I want to see is a playoff. Making a statement like that, I'm assuming you played sports at a college level. So, please educate me on how you felt going to bowl games at the end of the season.

I'm not disagreeing that teams lose money, but outside of the BCS games you do realize the Insight pays out the 3rd highest amount of all bowls behind the Cap One and Cotton, yes the Insight pays more than the Outback, Holiday, Alamo, Gator, etc...

This is how they moved up so far in the pecking order in the Big Ten and Big 12, hell they even pick before the Holiday Bowl now in the Big 12 and the Holiday Bowl is a very good bowl game.

No I didn't realize how much money the Insight pays. Somewhat surprising.

This is just my opinion. But I see non BCS January bowls as mid tier bowls that big programs kind of mock because its small fries to them. Anything in December I consider a low tier bowl because they feature teams with .500 conference records. Sometimes worse. I believe Iowa was invited to the Alamo a few years back after a 2-6 conference season.

As, I've said in many other threads. I really just want to see a playoff. Lots of money from TV rights and sponsers and more postseason games that are meaningful. Plus we get a true champion.

The date is hugely important to me...

I know NYD isn't prestigious the way it once was, but from a pure fan standpoint, getting up early to watch an entire day of football and knowing that you have the Hawks to watch is an immensely pleasurable feeling.
