Bob Costas

Speakiing of being sensitive: Hopefully someday we'll evolve to the point where using the word gay as a pejorative is no longer socially acceptable.

Or maybe we can evolve to the point that people stop being so dadgum sensitive about every other freaking word in the English language. Good God!

But to the subject at hand.....I've got 3 kids. My oldest is my daughter who's now in college but had no interest whatsoever in sports. My youngest two are boys, ages 13 and 8 right now. My oldest played football thru 6th grade when he decided he didn't want to play anymore so he could concentrate on basketball. My youngest played until they got to tackle in 3rd grade and I had him stop because it just seems absolutely ridiculous to have tackle football in 3rd freaking grade.

At 5.7 more than likely would put his kid at that size and more prone to injury in football. Wouldn't really have too much fun or really be effective anyways.

There are a hell of a lot more viewers out there than just you and the rest of the members of Hawkeye Nation and some of those people may take comfort in the fact that they're not the only ones fearful about their children playing football.

OK then I regress. I hope Bobs opinion makes them feel a lot better about their decsions.

not football, but i've endured my fair share of baseball injuries. tommy john surgery in the elbow and have also torn the labrum in my shoulder, broken bone in the shoulder, and moderate to severe tear of my rotator cuff in the same shoulder. if you notice, tommy john surgery has become pretty common for pitchers in the MLB.

if my 3 month old son comes to me in a few years and says he wants to pitch, i'm going out that night and buying a catchers mitt to catch him and will be damn proud to do so.

theres risk in everything you do. will i be nervous that this next pitch will be the one that causes him pain? probably, but i'm not going to deny him the fun he's had up until that point because I was afraid of what could possibly happen in the future

All of my baseball injuries were to my legs, never to my arm (only a sore arm once in a blue moon). Pulled muscles and ankle injuries mostly. But injuries can happen in any sport, even concussions. My son got a concussion in basketball. He dove on a loose ball and another player tried to as well and landed on my son's head.

When your kid pitches, it's not so much the arm injury you fear, but the line drive up the middle that scares you. Teach kids how to pitch when an easy motion that allows them to protect themselves once they deliver the pitch.

For God's sake. If you don't like Costas' opinion, don't listen to him. Don't read his articles. Just ignore him.

This really isnt about which sport is the most dangeres. Every parent needs to decide what is right for their kids. We should all respect their decsions. I just find it hard to belive there are people so pitiful they need Bob C. to validate their decsions

Yet you come to HN to get validation for your thoughts from a group of strangers that you've probably never met.

It's all perspective. You're more likely to get killed on a golf course than on the football field. Also, Costas is just another example of how the media tries to manipulate the minds of the public. If a small plane crashes and kills 2 people it gets national coverage, but if you have a 10 car pile-up that kills 2, nobody cares.

HEY! I saw "The Last Boy Scout"!

Well said. My son, who is now 33, played a variety of positions in little league. In high school he was a pitcher. Never got hurt pitching. However, when he was a catcher the batter threw a tantrum because he missed a bunt and hit my son in the mouth with his bat. My son lost his two front teeth. Also he took a few bad hops off the chest body when he played shortstop.

I agree with you. There's risk in everything you do. I was worried when he was on the mound, but he enjoys baseball to this day (well, softball anyway) and I wouldn't want to take something away from him that brought me a lot of joy over the years. Especially when he enjoyed playing as much as I did.

I agree, in principle. If it were as simple as choosing not to read his column, or switching the station away from his show, you'd have a point. But it's not.

He pontificates when he knows he has a captive audience. He pops up at halftime of a big game that everybody wants to watch, and ambushes the audience with his opinion pieces.

Few "choose" to watch him.

You could always mute the television when he's on.

Im interested, how many people commenting here have had a football related injury and what type of injury?
I played football and was never injured. Nor was I injured in the other contact sport I played. All of the injuries I have are from non-contact sports. Go figure.

I am not going to stop my son from playing football if he wants to. I am also not going to push him into it either.

But if he does decide to play, I am going to teach him the proper way to tackle and block.

This has been my approach also. So far, neither of them want to play football. I'm fine with that.

How old is his son? Maybe he's just holding him from playing before highschool age. The whole thing of having 5th graders play full contact is pretty ridic.
