Wouldn't let his kid play tackle football. Too dangerous. It's a choice and I respect that.. I also wonder if he let his kid ride a bike, skateboard or drive a car? All three are activities full of risk.
Probably no big deal. I just hope this thing doesn't go so far as a concerted effort to ban the sport..

Can you imagine the Fall without football??

I can imagine, its easy if you try. But seriously, I enjoy football but the list of things more important to me than sports is quite long so if it went away Id probably miss it for a year then forget about it.

Comparing injuries from football to riding a bike or skateboarding is a little ridiculous, especially when you start getting into higher levels of football (high school etc.) All the hits in practices/games, there's a lot more risk. Yes you can get hurt at all of those, but there's no real comparison to what you put out there for odds of being injured.

Bike Jousting and Skateboard Wars are far more dangerous than tackle football. Just sayin.

It's interesting how we consider some things really dangerous, and others things not so much.

My brother drives a stock car in the summers here in Iowa. Dirt racing is a lot of fun when you have a dog in the fight.

That said, we have had our share of bad wrecks over the years....rolls, flips, etc...
The cars are extremely safe. A lot of consideration goes into the safety equipment, and my brother has said numerous times that he feels safer on the race track than he does sitting in the truck on the way TO the racetrack! He has never been injured in his race car beyond a few bumps and bruises.

At family get-togethers the topic seems to eventually land on how dangerous racing is and there is curiosity as to why we still do it.

Fast forward to this week. My brother is playing in a Park and Rec volleyball league. He goes up to spike the ball and when he lands he is halfway on someone else's foot. He hears his ACL snap. 80% tear.

Boom...just like that, he's now looking at surgery, 6 weeks of crutches and rehab after that. Volleyball, NOT racing has caused him all this discomfort and inconvenience!

The moral of the story is that everything can be dangerous. If we all live a risk-adverse life, what fun would that be?

You respect it and then go on to make this sarcastic inquiry?

Doesnt seem like you respect it.

To be fair, I've never heard of anyone dying while playing Volleyball.

Costas is welcome to his opinion. But his self-righteous know-it-all schtick is getting tired.

Agree with Drummmer. If he has a kid he doesnt want to play football that fine, it up to him. But I dont know why he thinks we all want him to do a editorial as if his opinion should matter to the rest of us. Seems the last few years he thinks we care what he thinks about a lot of subjects.

Why anyone cares about bob coastas's inane opinion on anything is beyond me. Complete tool. He's a self righteous egomaniac.

Yeah exactly, it isn't that you can't be injured in any sport, it is the seriousness of the injuries that is different... which basically I think comes down to the brain injuries and occasional paralyzing injuries in football you just don't see as frequently in other sports. I hope college football is taking it seriously, as these players don't have a players union and a few million dollars in their bank account looking out for them like NFL players do. I hate to see a college kid affected for life and his potential career, as college football is only a very small percentage of what hopefully is a long a fruitful life.

We used to do bike jousting with wood broom stick handles. No shield - you had to steer the bike somehow. Moderately painful and not often repeated, as I recall.

Would any of you have a problem with your kids boxing? It's just another sport and one with far fewer injuries (below the neck anyway).

You respect it and then go on to make this sarcastic inquiry?

Doesnt seem like you respect it.

Actually wasn't meant as a sarcastic inquiry. It was meant as a serious inquiry and I wonder what others felt about the subject..
I personally worry far more about my kids being on the road in a car than I do about them in any particular sport. I have had kids in lots of sporting activities and the worst injury we have experienced is a concussion my daughter received while playing Volleyball.

Maybe his son isn't interested in sports and or not very athletic anyway, so it's just a bunch of nonsense.

Hey parents have a right to protect their kids how they see fit.
My kid played hockey, was on travel team for one of the NHL youth teams.

Got his bell run a few times, and each time it took a little longer to shake things off
Reached a point where I said no more. He wasn't happy about it, but given what we
know today about concussions figured better later in life that he has the ability to remember how mad he was at me when I made him stop playing.

There are some sports that do present a higher injury risk than others. Kid still plays baseball,
golfs, and other things but the chances of head injuries in those sports, probably not as great. Parents just need to weigh the risks.

At least they are finally getting back to teach kids how to tackle correctly, and that is a step in the right direction.

Yes people have died playing volleyball. Hit their head on the floor after falling.

The point I was trying to make is that there is danger and/or risk of injury in absolutely everything we do. We can't protect ourselves or our kids from every single possibility that exists. We can only be selective and make the best decisions we can.

Is a ****** nozzle. He's never played a sport in his life. My kid will wipe out in his bike (w out a gay helmet on), will play foozeball if he wants to, and will get knocked down and hurt. That's part of being a kid. A little over sensitive???? Meh

I believe that for many parents, not letting their kids play football is being selective as they feel the danger is too high. If you play football long enough you are virtually guaranteed to have chronic and possibly debilitating pain for the rest of your life.
