Bob Brooks

I'll never forget his segments in BTNs feature on Nile Kinnick, describing how he keeps a tcassete tape of the Heisman acceptance speech and plays it at the start of each football season.

An absolute Hawkeye media legend. RIP, Bob Brooks

I grew up when not very many games were on TV. I remember Tait Cummings, Ron Gonder and Brooks among other. The era is now completely passed/

Growing up in northern Iowa, I unfortunately never heard Bob call a game...we listened to Zabel on WHO. I hope there are some archived games I could sample.....

End of an era. RIP.

Loved listening to him doing high school football games. He had the right voice for radio. He's gone but never forgotten.I talked to him a couple times and he didn't know me but he took the time for some small talk. There won't be another like him.God Bless. RIP

Thought this one was hilarious:

Voice of the Hawkeyes (Todd Brommelkamp): Remembering Bob Brooks

Stories like the one about his legendary tape recorder. In an era when most reporters use digital recording devices or their phones to capture audio, Brooksie stayed true to his handheld cassette player which he would sometimes play back at loud volumes much to the chagrin of those working near him. In the mid 2000s after Illinois played Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Brooksie thrust his tape recorder in the face of the Illini's star guard, Dee Brown.

"Yo, dawg, is that a VCR?" Brown asked.

"No, dawg," Brooksie responded with much derision. "It isn't."

Truly a legend! Will be missed by many! As a friend of mine said, "If ever anyone desreved to be buried in the end zone it would be Bob Brooks" RIP

So sad… I’m in my mid 30s and between him and Zabel they were my child hood and early adult hood… They are just such a barometer of time for me in the sense that I guess I’m not a kid anymore… I feel so so fortunate to have had him and them both get me into being a fan. Iowa has them to thank for me being a life long die hard. It’s pretty much as simple as that. I grew up in NW Iowa where my folks didn’t let me watch a ton of tv so radio and newspapers were everything to me. May the generation behind me be half as fortunate as I was… RIP Bob.

There will never be another Brooksie. His legend will live on for many...

Curious, what was his drink a Manhattan or an Old Fashion? We plan on making some for the first tailgate in remembrance of the great Bob Brooks.

When I coached for Jerry Mauren and Greg Reed at Kennedy HS back in the 70's, Bob would give as much of himself to high school coaches and players as he did to the Hawks. He would be around the locker room after a game at Kingston, visiting, doing interviews, and just being Bob Brooks. Indeed a classy guy. Ran into him and his trusty tape recorder on the sidewalk outside Carver Hawkeye last winter and we had a nice chat. I am grateful that I got a chance to visit with him.

Safe home mr brooks.

Met him in Wisconsin a few years back night before a football game. He was a great guy.

He was a true legend that will be missed.

Growing up in Cedar Rapids, I preferred Ron Gonder for Hawk games, but enjoyed Brooks on high school games.
