Bo Bower Starting

This is a big surprise to me. It's been reported that Bower knocked Mends out of the first team spot and has been practicing with the 1's for some time. So Bower is better than Mends, Hockaday, Garbutt, and Amani Jones? Or is this just another Ferentz motivation tactic? I have bad memories of Bower getting severely juked in the Taxslayer bowl.

You guys are remembering his play from 2 years ago. I have no idea how he will perform, but I would guess it will be better. His issue wasn't speed, it was deciding what he needed to do 2 steps too late as a freshman.

Greenwood is a good comparison. My God, was he a disaster sometimes at Safety his freshman year. The game at Happy Valley stands out in my mind. Ended up being a fabulous player.

If Bower is the starter, then chances are he has improved significantly from his Freshman to Junior years. Not exactly unprecedented. Then again, maybe this will be short lived. I'll wait until I see him play THIS year.

I say good for him,was beat out last year but stayed the course and didn't get down.Work hard, get better and good things will happen. We need good depth at LB, I'm sure we will see Mends playing also.Go Hawks

If he beat out Mends, then we should have some depth at LB. That is good. I would like to see Mends subbed in, or added for the Raider package. I'm all for rotation of players, if there is little to no drop off. It keeps them fresh. We need that. Especially on 22 play drives.

Would like to see Hockaday get a chance. He was explosive in his HS tape. Hard to believe he can't beat Bower out, but maybe Bower improved that much...maybe. Morehouse talks about certain players earning their "union cards." I hope that isn't the case with Bower. Time will tell.

I like the Bower story. Good for him. He struggled early on to make the tackle at first contact, but he obviously has now taken care of that. But he does play fast.
And on that point, I watch a lot of college football, and it amazes me how many missed tackles there are in so many games. When I watch the Hawks though, I feel I'm spoiled because they almost always make the tackle when they're supposed to. So many defenders miss.
Go Hawks!

I hate to question this but I am super surprised and nervous about this development. I expected to see Mends and Hockaday not Bower - hope this is not a union card deal as was mentioned. We even pulled Hockaday's RS last year? That seems wasteful now. Hope to eat a pile of crow but have not seen it with Bower so far.

HE GETS NO RESPECT!!!! WE NEED TO PLAY THE NO RESPECT CARD BECAUSE THIS KID GETS NOT RESPECT!!! NO RESPECT!!!!

I agree, he has shown flashes and I really never thought it was physical but more that he was having to think too much. Maybe the light has come on for him, that would be a good thing.

Kirk said Bower has a slight edge but that it is neck and neck. To me that is a good thing. A good competition for an open spot only makes the players better.

I like good competition as well, but boy I thought Mends would be an excellent addition to this D. Athletic freak. Maybe just not getting the mental aspect? Hopefully Bower surprises me.

Perhaps, somehow he got a whole lot faster.

Hockaday moved to MIKE linebacker due to a Josey Jewell injury (ankle). Otherwise Hockaday would have been in the mix at WILL

This surprised me. I assumed that Mends was far more athletic than Bower, who seemed to me to be lacking. Obviously I did not understand it the way the coaches do.
