blackhawks firesale

I'm not shocked that is hockey right now for pretty much anyone not called, "Red Wings", "Rangers", or "Sharks"...they got their title now its time to get the finances straight...they would never be able to pay most of those guys.

On ESPN this morning, they showed a screen with all of the players that are gone since they won the cup. It was quite a list.

They had to cut fat somewhere, or they were going to be over the cap. They are not throwing in the towel by any means, though. Kane and Toews are practically lifers, they still have the best D in NHL, and they wanted to keep Sharp so bad that they dropped Niemi. Yet, still grabbed a pretty good keeper in Turco.

i understand why they had too just surprised niemi is gone that was the one i was mainly surprised with for chicago but your right turco will work

It's too bad, but the NHL hard salary cap makes it tough. Let's see how this works out for the Blackhawks. At least we got the Cup! :)

A lot went into this beyond simply the salary cap itself.

Things such as Niemi getting arbitration that set is value at $2.75 mil. Talon got fired because of the mistakes last off-season where he had to pay guys more money, on top of terrible contracts such as the one for Huet, and so on.

Agreed. But all of those numbers basically point back to the team could not afford to keep everyone from the Cup-winning team. They had to decided who to keep and who to let go. Niemi's arbitration number sealed the deal.

It would be a lot worse if they hadn't won the cup last season. Looks like they'll be searching for a new goalie again next season unless Crawford is the only option.

This is the correct answer; that team hasn't turned a profit for years. I was also reading about how their tickets are going to go from the cheapest in the league (last year) to the most expensive next year.
