Bigger Worry - WR or Safety

I would agree the secondary might be the most vulnerable position. We've shown we can play without a strong wr core but we've been strong in the secondary almost every year that I can remember. I think our secondary has some huge upside where I don't see as much upside with our receivers. Let's hope we are surprised in both areas.

Agree we are very vulnerable at WR.
Having MV back is great (and a huge surprise considering NCAA rulings of the past), but we must look at the facts:
1. We will have a receiver group that's among the youngest in the country.
2. WR is among the toughest positions to transition successfuly from HS to D-1.
3. Experienced opposing CBs will have the mental advantage/confidence knowing they're covering an 18 yr-old.
That means they'll be thinking "Iowa is my best shot all season for a pick-6!"

Praying that someone breaks out a little "Shock & Awe" and rises to the challenge and I'll be HAPPY to hopefully eat these words.

Good question WOTC. My quick response would be WR but I have been convinced it's safety.

Any production from Iowa's receivers is icing. Safety play is fundamental to Iowa's scheme.

Ask it this way: will Iowa's receivers have more 25+ yard plays or Iowa's safeties give up more 25+ yard plays?

Granted receivers are only on the receiving end of long plays (for the most part) Safeties are involved on both running and passing games as last lines of defense. But the impact/results are the same. Safeties have a huge responsibility and it's no accident that the best teams Iowa's had have had great safety play

WR giveth and the Safety taketh away. In our current offensive formula, the taketh away is pretty damn important in the equation. I hope it changes, but until we start putting up 35 points consistently...safety will be my bigger concern.

I had to bring this thread up again...sorry for saying I told you so...but sometimes it's fun to look at posts before the season started. After yesterday, I'm still going with safety. Watching Gevase take a big bite out of the phantom crossing pattern yesterday to give one up for 74 yards at a big moment...well...we may have issues with safety play.

Now, why we allow a wide receiver a free release to the safety in that situation is pretty damn questionable. You had a LB out there...who hit no one or who didn't try to alter that route. That being said, you can't bite that hard on a crossing route when you are the only one in the middle of the field. You give them the 10 yard cross and live to the next down.

You are correct. Easley has been a nice addition to the WR group. I feel like we are okay (certainly not great) with all of the guys who can catch the ball. Our secondary has some huge question marks, especially at safety. Hopefully they can get some things cleaned up before Pedo U or it will be a very long day.

I don't know that worry is the right word but I would say if I was a coach on the team I'd have the entire defense run tackling drills all week,

I also wish Phil Parker would learn when to call blitzes. Seems like every time we blitz it gets exploited for a touchdown.

DBs and it isn't even close after the last game. Easley has been solid his first two games, Vandy may not be the player he was but he's still a very solid possession WR who you can count on to catch a 3rd down pass and move the sticks. That's not even including the TEs. The DBs had one of the worst days in memory.

I'm not convinced he could have tackled the guy who scored on that long TD. Best hope may be for him to jump 1 out of 20 of those passes. Anyway, when the d-line is bad it makes the secondary look really bad and yesterday was one of those days.

Seems like it but it's not true. I understand your sentiment. There was more blitzing and man-to-man at the end of the 4th to get ISU out of rhythm.

That's part of the reason why ISU ran it 3 straight times. If Montgomery gets loose on just one of those ...

He didn't.

What ifs are for ISU to ... suuuuuuckiiiiiiit
