Big Ten's Most Overrated

Derrick Nix-Michigan's Mr. Basketball his senior year and I am still trying to figure out how. He was lazy and watching him in a faster pace game in high school he couldn't make it accross half court. Nix is neither in-shape or athletic enough to be even a solid performer in the Big Ten. My prediction for Nix is that he will tranfer back to his hometown of Detroit and play at the University of Detroit in the future. When he left MSU before they went off to their tournament, I was surprised to see him back. Even watching the game today agains Minnesota, Jim Jackson says that MSU needs Nix and his presence...for what?

There are more I have in mind, but Nix sticks out to me.

Just curious...reasons?

I know he is just a frosh but his particular skill set just does not appeal to me. I remember watching him against Barnes last year and thought the same thing that I do now after seeing a few of their games this year. He is not overly good at any particular aspect of the game and I just expected much more out of him early on in his career. I know he has a lot of time left to improve, but I never see him developing into an NBA type player. He just does not seem to be as athletic as he was billed to be and he seems to come with some serious baggage in the form of his attitude.

I think it is a bit unfair to pick on freshman at this point, but if you are going to pin point a freshman why not Adrien Payne at MSU. I believe he was the No. 20 overall player and a 5-star prospect. What has he done in his time, he can't even start on a team that has no quality frontcourt players. Draymond Green is more of a SF and is a good player, but not a top-shelf player, he does a lot of good things, but not one thing great. Green is a good leader and a solid player.
When I watched Richmond early, I was surprised he wasn't starting and apparently Bruce Weber agreed. Richmond does a lot of things good, but nothing great at this point, he will as he is a freshman, he is not a one and done player. Richmond may not project as an NBA player right now, but I could care less, he is in College Basketball. All this nuttiness of projecting players to the NBA is shallow. There are such a small number of spots available each year and so many players go undrafted, I just don't know why kids are in such a hurry to get somewhere that is so difficult to make. The players in the NBA can be found anywhere, to be there a player must be at such a different level athletically and there just aren't that many players out there.

I agree it is tough to judge freshman but he came in with a lot of fanfare. The next two players who came to my mind after him was Payne and Appling. They got away with sexual assault so maybe they are better than I think. The only other guy who I could come up with was Williams from Minnesota. I just never really heard Nix get much love so I wouldn't consider him overrated.

Okay, I missed something living in Michigan with Payne and Appling, do you have a link to that story? I coach Volleyball in the fall, so I am shut off to the world from August until November, unless we don't have a tournament on Saturday and I can catch up.
Nix was a 4-star recruit, Mr. Basketball and a Top 60 rated recruit, I never understood it after seeing him play in high school.
If I am going to pick a player from Minnesota it would be Ralph Sampson III, not because of his name, but all I have hear about was his improvement, but he looks like the same raw project he was as a freshman.
Williams is ultra-athletic, but is improving each game, he has a ways to go for being a top 100 rated player.

Jereme Richmond has actually surprised me....

I watched a few of his high school games and he was an absolute piece of sh** attitude wise. He seems to play with a lot more maturity and poise than he showed in high school, maybe something clicked for him or the coaches/older players have put him in his place.

I thought he tried to make the great pass/play rather than making a smart play in high school. From watching him so far it seems as if he has slowed down and I like him better that way.

I actually also was surprised to see him bringing the ball up the court and playing some PG at times this year for ILL. I LOVE 6 foot 7 guys who are 2/3 men and so does the NBA. He might be an NBA caliber player after 3 years of college ball. I do seem to remember him being hyped up some, but not a ton.

I was hoping Basabe was going to be more of a 3/4 but he appears at this point to be more of a 4 because he can't shoot from behind the arc and he doesn't handle well enough to be a small forward. I like his athleticism but I wish he had some small forward game.

It is still kinda strange how those things played out.

Overrated or not fulfilling expectations?

I know several players that start and put up some good stats that I think are overrated.

A freshman should NEVER be on an overrated list... NEVER. That said they should NEVER be listed as a conferences pre season POY either.

Richmond is starting as a frosh on a top 25 team...not overrated. I am impressed how he is letting the game come to him,not forcing up shots,or drives, and is doing all the little things like rebounding, passing and defense. He is not a one and done, but definitely an NBA prospect.

Rod Williams is listed as the #17 pick in the mock draft at Draft Express, and I see little production out of him to this point. He has the tools, but is timid.
I agree that Adrien Payne has not shown much for his high ranking, but as has been said, too early to make a call on frosh, especially on good teams where they get little playing time.

Marice Creek has not come back strong from his knee injury ...he was looking great last year tho.
Appling looks good to me so far.
Siebert of OSU was highly ranked but is not getting time yet,but looks like he could be a player. Craft,Thomas and Sullinger are lites out good.
For the illini....it is Crane who has disapointed...might be hurt.
And Taran Buie of PSU....Battle's brother...not seen much from him.

I thought JR Morris of Michigan was overrated last year coming in,but this year he is looking very strong....sometimes it takes a year. Smotzyk of Michigan looks good also.

So far, solid group of frosh in the league, but when you take out the OSU boys...just average.

I was headed down that road originally, but every time MSU plays and Derrick Nix is in the game, it is amazing how he is talked about. He was overrated coming out of high school and certainly is not fulfilling expectations.
I would love to see your list, I have several in mind, my No. 1 guy on that list is Dimitri McCamey, when he plays the game he is great, but his focus wavers too often and that is why Illinois has not performed to their talent. Mike Tisdale is another and throw Mike Davis on that too, heck add Delvon Roe as well. There are many reasons for them, but I am curious to read your thoughts.
