Big Ten Record Predications

After watching the Hawkeyes in the preseason and losing Cully Payne to an injury, just wondering what predications Hawkeye fans have for this year Big Ten Record.

Im hoping for 6-12 but realistically thinking 4-14. We have too many players that fit Lick's and Bo Ryan's style and not enough playmakers and athletic players similar to MSU and the Gophers. Good to see Gatens step up against Drake but the Big Ten is really loaded this year, Hope Fran can add some talent this spring. The Freshman look promising though!!!!

The Payne injury is bigger than what people think, he was not right from game one. I disagree that we have too many players that don't fit. 4 of the 9 players that are in the rotation are from the 2010 class, all new. To think they don't fit, I question.
My prediction for wins, I would have said 6 with Payne, but 4 looks to be a good number and unfortunately, the same win total as last season, but with Gatens and Payne being out the time they have, the youth wasn't quite ready to step up.

I think you're pretty much right on. It's looking pretty good for 7-5 going into conference play, assuming we can beat LA Tech. 4-14 would put us at 11 wins for the year pending the BTT, and my pre-season prediction was 12 wins. I'm not sure how we do much better than that, when looking at our schedule, unless this team pleasantly surprises.. To get to 15 wins or so we need to get close to .500 in conference. I just don't see it this year.

I'd say this season is shaping up about how I expected so far. Improvement and competetiveness is what I'll be looking for in conference play, regardless of the number of W's. I do think we'll steal a game or two that maybe we shouldn't win.

Next year, I'm hoping at a minimum we can get to .500+ overall (16-17 wins or so) and maybe sneak into some sort of post-season tournament. Anything better is gravy, of course.

We lost two games by 3 points, one game by 5 points and our double digit losses were to Xavier who is 7-2 and a 7-3 SDSU team that will likely make the tourny.

8-3 is what I predicted for OOC games. We could have / should have beat ISU and Wake. Big leads in both games and we just couldn't handle the success. If not for those two games we would be sitting where I expected. Oh well. I'm not heartbroken about the OOC schedule because you can clearly see improvement and future success.

Conference schedule wise we start out with a terrible schedule. Ill (L), OSU (L), Purdue (L), NW (W), Minny (L) and OSU (L) (again) is not an easy first 6 games. We then play IU (W), PSU (W) and Mich (W). MSU (L) comes in and clubs us like baby seals. We then play IU (W), Wisky (W) and Minny (L). NW (W), Mich (W), Ill (L), MSU (L) and Purdue (L) to finish conference play at 8-10 heading into the tournament. We should be an 8 seed and play Michigan (W) and lose the next game (L).

Final record is 16-16. I won't complain about a 13-19 season either.

I don't see us in a post season tournament this year but next year we will be. Archie & Brommer will have a nice year of learning under their belt, we add White and hopefully another bigger man from the JUCO ranks.

Between Basabe, May, McCabe, Brommer, Archie, White and one other we should be ok.

My wish list, just like it is for probably 99% on this board, is to get a 6'10" or taller big fella that can play D on the inside and hopefully force our opponents guards to cheat less on the perimeter.

the big 10's gonna be rough this year, with or without Payne. I'd say 5. I just want the guys on the roster to improve as the year goes on and that appears to be the case. This success of this year won't be measured by the record.

Stormin where are you??? Sorry, but Lick did a terrible job of recruiting and we are paying for it, the next 3 years of recruiting we will either turn the tide or become irrelevent.

I think we can split with Ill., NW & Mich., and then beat Ind. (2x's) & PSU (play only once). That would give us 6 wins, combine that with a couple upsets (Wisc. & MN) - we could realistically end up with 8 wins in the BT. A little luck, maybe a couple more. Illinois looked very beatable the other day and MN has everyone scratching their heads. Maybe this is the year we get the NW monkey off our back and beat them 2x's- would be nice. As tough as this conference is, though, we could be lucky to pull off just 3 wins, also... at least it's fun watching them play again. :)

I will project the Hawks to beat IU,Mich,NW and Wis in CHA. Thats it for wins. No wins on the road this year in the league.
Losing Gatens and Payne early cost the Hawks a couple of wins, which could have positioned them to get to my pre-season win total of 12-13,now, alas, not gonna get there, I suspect. If any of those teams happen to have a hot shooting nite at CHA..could be worse.

So far, I think we are probably a bit better than I expected (especially than I would have expected being without Payne). I am going to reach a bit and say that they will win 7 in the BigTen. That won't be easy, but I am hoping that they can upset one or two teams...

Anywhere from 3-5 wins seems most likely. I had us pegged for 9-11 wins this year...my prediction is looking solid.

We are irrelevant now and yes Lick did a terrible job, but the players that are left aren't bad. You will see, there is not one holdover player on the roster that is terrible...maybe I am wrong, but that is just the way I see it and Fran just needs to continue to add talent.

I'm in the four-win club too. 11-12 wins is about where many thought we would be. Injuries to Cully (not playing healthy) and Gatens cost us at least two wins this year.

What is your definition of "bad"? I don't think there is a starter on this team that would start for MSU, OSU, Minne, Purdue, Illinois, or Wisconsin. We certainly need more talented players to finish in the upper half of the conference. If we are comparing our players to those top half Big 10 teams, then yes they are bad. We are painfully behind most of the teams in this conference as far as talent....and in order to catch up before 5 years go by we need to pull in MORE talent than they do in these next few recruiting classes. That means on average 2 top 100 recruits and a top 150 every year. I'm not sure that is realistic....the rebuilding may take longer than most hope.

Amen: the new practice facility will help, but we have a lot of catching up to do, we have great kids but when is the last time we have had a recruiting class that got people excited? Brunner, Horner, this is not negative but reality, because I love our new coaching staff and style but Fran has to improve the talent base or he may literally explode during a future game from frustration or he may kill an official.
