Big Ten not "looking" to expand

They're done for now. Expansion talk will come up again when the Big 12 eventually starts looking for new members. Everybody is looking to secure a bigger slice of the pie, and it's going to drive what happens down the road.

God I hope we don't have to suffer through annual games with Rutgers and Syracuse.

It's good how it is with 12.

Since none of us are privy to as much information as Gene Smith you have to assume that what he says is pretty much the status. His remarks indicate the door is open for schools to approach the Big Ten, which by prior account upward of 14 schools indicated an interest. Source of this was the Illinois AD. We are still 15 months away from the official end of the expansion study the Big Ten regularly does every so many years.

The Nebraska admittance was rushed, but it must have been a somewhat pre-calculated risk that it would work. Some of the other schools that are interested may be working on addressing concerns expressed by current members. I think that may be the case with Missouri. That could be the same for a school like Rutgers or Pittsburgh.

I would venture that as December 2011 nears we will hear rumors. I don't expect Notre Dame will jump to any conclusion until after two years of Brian Kelly being on the job. I think Jack Swarbick is giving Kelly a couple years to evaluate life outside a conference. Lou Holtz, like him or not, indicates ND should entertain joining. He was the last ND coach to win a national championship. The coaches since Lou may be telling Swarbick the same thing. Bob Davie, who does broadcast, seems like an astute person. I sense he feels that ND should be evaluating its independence.

They claim to be 'done' and will not actively seek other schools, but i read this as they are leaving the door open for somebody...ND perhaps?

What is your take?
"Leaving the door open" is not a new development. The door has long been open to the U of Texas; what is new is that the Big Ten is mving toward agreeing to accept TX A&M as well (the killer to TX joining the BT twenty years ago, when the BT turned to Penn State afterwards).

There is still some talk that consideration of furher expansion could be accelerated, but it isn't likely UNLESS TX signals greater & immediate interest. In that case, look for Pitt & Rutgers possibly to become Eastern additions to balance the two Texas schools.

Again, the BT will NOT offer membership to Notre Dame, and ND's administration has No interest in joining the BT. The overriding principal priority in any expansion for the BT is to increase its research capabilities (and potential for the funding it brings to the consortium and the member universities), meaning any candidate has to be (like all the BT schools) a major rsearch university. ND is NOT a research oriented dinstitution, and it has absolutely no intention of becoming one: it wants to be the very best academic & teaching university it can be, the rival and equal of any prestige school in America.

Of the remaining viable options left, and the fact that it will have to be two teams at once this next time around. It has to be Mizzou and ND. Pitt could be another choice to get into the mix but I really can't see any other teams that are really legit for expansion from a football perspective..and lets be honest this should be all about football.

I don't think I could ever consider Rutgers an equal partner...and for that reason I hope they never join.
