Big Ten Hoops for 2013-2014: Who Returns, Where Iowa Fits

As much as I hate to say this, I highly doubt Wisconsin finishes as low as 7th. Bo keeps them in the top 4 pretty much every year and always finds a way to replace good players. Every time I think "okay they are finally go to fall back a bit" they find a way to ugly up games and win. Same story every year, just different players.

They still have Jackson, Brust, and Dekker will their next great player. They're not going anywhere.

I'd have to agree with this. And don't forget they will get Gasser back.

I'm guessing Ingram will either redshirt or transfer next season.
I've said this all along. There isn't enough playing time to go around. Of the 12 scholarship players coming back, he is the most logical to transfer, but if he doesn't, then I would expect a red-shirt.

I would also look to Jok or Olesani as candidates to red-shirt. I'm not saying they will, especially GO, but they seem most likely to me.

Just my $.02 .. ..

I think people who are expecting a freshman to come in and shoot one of the better percentages from 3 on the team are going to be disappointed.

Im not saying it doesnt happen but it seems like people are expecting Jok to come in and shoot like Stauskus has this year.

You mean like Oglsby shooting 42% last year as a freshman?

it will really depend on who comes back - preseason rankings mean a lot more in football where the poll matters.

Whatever happens I expect us to legitmatley compete for a big ten title next year with what we have coming back and looking at what happened this year with all the close loses.

Could not agree more. If Jok comes in and tears it up, great, but its silly to expect that out of a freshman on a team loaded with returning players. Personally Im expecting much more out of Utoff.

And even if neither one of them contribute anything Iowa will still be vying for top 4 in the league.

Mike Gessel will likely be Iowas best 3 point shooter next year and Marble won't be far behind.

He shot 37%, and that was boosted by a handful of meaningless performances when games were already decided, and he went off when it no longer mattered.

I see this a lot and I'm not sure I agree with it (regarding JO shooting good in games that don't matter). The way I see it is it always matters to the shooter. I get that high pressure shots are tough to make but its not like he is shooting high pressure shots. The few in his career he has shot he missed but they were in and out so its not like he cracked under pressure.

I just don't think you can say the only reason he went off in those games is because there was no pressure because the game was already lost. Is there really more pressure in a 3 point game with 12 minutes left in the 1st half? I don't think Josh's problem is that he can't handle pressure as much as he just can't find his rhythm.

yeah we are going to have so many guys fighting for minutes next year... don't remember something like that since the late 80's

Josh Oglesby shot 37.2% from 3 last year as a freshman. Im not sure who this Oglsby is you are referring to.

Did you not read my post? I said I am not saying it doesnt happen, just that people should not expect that out of a freshman.

Stauskas is hitting 44.9% from downtown this year. That is a very high percentage for any player, let alone a freshman.

On the early entry deadline, apparently there are 2 deadlines which is pretty dumb.

The NCAA deadline to declare is April 16.

The NBA deadline for early entrants to declare is April 28.

So players have until the end of the month to put their name in for the draft.

Wisconsin loses their entire front line and will have to do a lot of chucking from beyond the arc.

7. Wisconsin

Would you stop trolling activerodent? :D

Seriously though I don't think Bo Ryan has ever finished in the 2nd half of the conference and Dekker could be one of the best players in the league next season. The loss of Berggren will hurt but not enough to drop Wisconsin all the way down to 7th.

Of the teams ahead of Iowa the best chances of them passing anybody are Ohio State and Indiana. With or without Thomas I think Iowa can be better than Ohio State and I think Indiana will be rebuilding a little, even with a great recruiting class coming in. Outside shot Iowa could pass Michigan as well.

I think Michigan State will be the heavy favorite next season but, IMO, there is not much difference between Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. Depending on who all comes back or leaves for the NBA it could be a log jam 2-6 in the Big Ten next season with little to no separation. Record wise Iowa ended up 3 games behind 5th place, which seems like a lot, but all of us that watched the games know Iowa was just a couple of points here and there from being one of the top teams this season. Hopefully by next season Iowa will have learned how to close out games, a lot of that should come from experience.

Three big question marks for Iowa coming into next season:
1. Growth of Iowa's talented freshman, specifically Gesell and Woodbury.
2. Perimeter shooting
3. Winning games on the road.

Iowa will be a more experienced team heading into next season so #3 could be taken care of by #1. Which leaves us with #2, and that is where Uthoff and Jok could come in and make the biggest impact.

Damn, after tonight it is going to be a long off season. When does the PTL start? :D

I may very well be wrong on this but I think April 28 is the deadline to declare. I think April 16 is the deadline for withdrawing from consideration as an underclassman.

1 - Michigan State
2 - Iowa
3 - Michigan
4 - Ohio State
5 - Indiana
6 - Wisconsin
7 - Purdue/Minnesota
9 - Penn State
10 - Illinois
11 - Nebraska
12 - Northwestern

As to the tougher schedule...things don't get any easier for Ohio State and Michigan considering they have to visit Carver next year. A team wanting a win in Carver has to go through Fran, the team and the crowd...don't like anyone's chances next year.

Here's a stab at the minutes.

Marble = 30
White = 25
Gesell = 25
Woodbury = 20
Basabe = 20

Olaseni = 17
Uthoff = 17
McCabe = 15
Clemmons = 15
Jok = 8
Oglesby = 8
Meyer = 0 (has to wait his turn...after Basabe and McCabe leave his RS sophomore year)

Ingram - Red shirt

Minutes will float around depending on foul trouble, who's hot, injuries, etc. I know everyone is going to pick a player and say this guy will get more or another player will get less. I'm just giving an example of how it could break down. Eleven guys are getting meaningful minutes. We are deep. We are pressing. We are running. We are always fresh on defense. That's some scary good depth.
