Big Ten Conference play knocking teams down in polls.

Not that it matters greatly, but this week in the polls the Big Ten is going backwards playing against itself! Indiana -5 spots, Minnesota -3 spots, Ohio State -3 spots and Illinois dropped out of the rankings and not receiving any votes.

If they keep this up (which they surely will)... nobody in the Big Ten will be ranked by season end. The top 20 will be filled with teams such as Wyoming, San Diego State, and Bucknell... all of which are receiving votes over Big Ten teams because of W-L record!

If "Grade A" teams are playing each other and losing a few. Does that make them worse than the "Grade B" team who is undefeated against "Grade B" teams?

Illinois shouldn't be ranked. They aren't that good, just started the year shooting the 3-ball really, really well. Now they've come back to earth.

So many people simply pay attention to the W-L record. For instance Iowa is 13-5, but 4 of those losses were to teams in the Top 20! So the Hawkeyes are 13-1 against teams not in the Top 20... interesting. But... they are 0-4 against the Top 20. Ouch! Especially when they were in position to win 2 of those games.

Iowa doesn't deserve to be ranked. They've done nothing of the sort to earn that.

I think that VT lose is going to hurt for awhile. They just haven't been the same team since beating the Hawks and Okie State.

I think VT had an injury or 2 since then too IIRC

Not sure about that, but I know Green, the PG is still playing.

VT is following the same pattern they always do, look great to start the season, fade somewhere in the middle, have a big win and subsequently whine that they missed the NCAA tournament.

And at the end of the year the B1G will have more teams in the tourney than any other conference that says more than some mid-season rankings.

Which is why it's awesome that rankings don't mean anything in Bball.

Yup, this isn't the "zero tolerance" BCS BS.
The teams are selected based upon a committee, which understands SOS, and actually review data.
Rankings are nice, sure, but they mean little at the year's end regarding NCAA placement.

Greg didn't say anything of the sort.

VTU is 11-6 right? My point is that although it's probably not going to be considered a "good loss", it's also not going to be considered a bad loss either. By the end of the season, my prediction is it will just be considered a loss. Nothing more, nothing less. Their current RPI is 111, but I don't believe it will stay that bad. And they are currently tied for 4th in the ACC.

Even if were to be considered a bad loss at the end of the year, at least it's not Campbell bad.

This happens every season. If there is truly a top 10 team or two in the B1G, it -- or they -- will emerge in the next two or three weeks.

Lose four of the last five including at home to NW by 14 is not how you impress the voters.

As for rankings, the only one that matters for the tourney is the RPI at the end of the season. It is nice to get recognition of a number by your name though during the season. I thought Duke should have kept their #1 ranking despite the loss of their first game which happened to be at a ranked in state rival in NC St. Voters live in the now, lose and go down, beat a ranked team you might jump someone.
