Hell yes. The national championship has done more damage to college football.
I would bet the demand for it...starting back in the later 90s came from:
-TV networks
-University presidents who wanted the money the TV networks would provide
-athletic departments for maybe 10% of programs
--fans of maybe 10% of programs
-fans of most teams, who either weren't a student or likely never attended a single game

I think most schools reluctantly went along with it. I think most diehard fans/alums just went along with it.

For all it's potential to be a nightmare...name a year that the BCS didn't work. I think the BCS was a decent middle ground and tried to preserve to some degree some of what made college football big enough to start attracting money in the first place.
