Big 10 Utopia

Just trying to figure out why there are soo many bad teams in the Utopian Big 10. With all the money from tv contracts, how can teams like Purdue, Mn, Il, In, be so bad?

Purdue, historically, isn't bad. In fact, they've been pretty good. They've been bad lately, but I think that beating them won't be easy...even this year.

Illinois finished very strong last year.

Illinois has been to the same number of BCS games we have. Granted they've been to maybe one more Bowl besides that, but still.... Sure seems like they should be better given the talent in the state, especially on the OL and DL

Maybe because it is not MLB with no salary cap, where the richest teams generally make the playoffs. Minnesota cannot just outbid LSU for players,ya know? Especially when entrance requirements are different for different schools and conferences, money is not the determining factor.

This is easy. Location, location, location. I realize entrance requirements are steep, but the Big 10 schools are all in states with less elite players. The elite guys come from the warm weather states(not all, but a majority). Those states are downright crazy about their HS football, and all the kids play, and are dedicated to becoming the best players they can be. Filling your roster with this type of player really helps. The Pac10 has California, Big12 has Texas, and the SEC/ACC have Florida and the deep south. The Big 10 has Ohio/Penn,which doesn't produce the same quantity of elite players.

Higher education standards and not near the selection of "speed" athletes in the Big 10's backyard compared to SEC.

Pretty much this. The best players are in the south. The best coaches go where the best players are.

Over the years, Ole Miss, Miss State, Kentucky, Vandy, and more recently Tennessee have not been all that formidable. While the SEC is a better conference than the others, I would say the PAC10 has had more overall depth from top to bottom. The Big 10 is not all that far away from the SEC with the admission of Nebraska. What is holding it back, is Michigan's temporary decline and Penn State's situation with JoPa.
