Big 10 speed ranking

I've never thought of Iowa as being fast. In fact when I thought of any other team in the conference I imagined that team to have faster DBs, WR, QB, RBs, LB. I don't know why but that has always been my perception. Purdue seems fast, Indiana seems fast, NW seems fast on and on.

You never hear ferentz talking about how fast anyone is on his team. He just never talks about speed.

I've heard several prominent people say that this Powell dude is the fastest guy in a HOX uni since Dwight.

We shall see. That would be beneficial if true.

Pretty tough to take any ranking seriously when no data is presented.

Right, we can't take serious the obvious that tOSU has superior team speed to that of Minnie because I didn't present any hard data that indicates this.

While we're at it, I presented no hard data saying Bama has superior talent to Iowa. Can't take that serious either.

Killer thought process, man.

But then again if you present stats someone will bring up the fact Joe Namath is in the Hall of Fame and his stats suck.

Oh yeah Kroul had a 4.7 and King a 4.8 perhaps the fastest interior line duo Iowa has had since that stat has been kept.

i don't honestly remember nebby being overly fast. i know tmart is for a QB, but are they that fast at the rest of the positions?
I don't think they had all that much speed on offense, but the defense was pretty fast (has been for several years now).

Actually, that is quite the contrary. On O, guys like WRs Bell, Turner, TE Reed (last year) and of course TMart were very, very fast. This year we got a couple of RS FR WRs and a true FR RB that are supposed to be newcomers with good speed. I think that weather conditions in Iowa City hampered our showing a little.

Our D last year was pretty slow. We lost our fastest LB early in the year, and the other LBs were pedestrian. One of our staring safties ran a 4.7 40 at the combine, and our D-ends were nothing but dancing bears out there. Pretty bad. Allegedly, they are talking about playing a bunch of young newcomers that are very fast on the D. Look for the Ss, LBs, and at least one DE to be much more athletic than last years bunch. Heck, Nate Gerry (the kid from SD that Iowa offered) is pushing for time at the Dime spot and Buck LB, and he runs a legit 10.3 100.

Well, shucks, Freed; I read your post, even though you are on my ignore list, thinking maybe you had something interesting to present. Why so defensive? I was simply saying that we would know so much more if we had 40 times, or whatever speed data might be available. I would love to know how Iowa's team speed rates against other teams. BTW, your attempt to draw an analogy, OSU/Minnie and Iowa/Alabama, to my comment about data in re: team speed, is a much better example of "...killer thought process, man."

Thanks.

Why was I so defensive? Well, do guys go through menopause at a certain age? Sorry, my defensive mood usually is at its greatest late at night, the time I responded to you. Again, sorry.

Sarcasm of posts about 'fast' interior line players? No, not you? Yes, for me. What was Iowa's record when Kroul and King played extensively?

No it is when you focus on one stat...like ypa...people focus on one thing for joe Namath and that is why he is in the hall...he shouldn't be.

Team speed is not a strength or trademark of the Iowa Hawkeyes. We've struggled against teams that have speed and like to play in open space. All you have to do is watch some old games. ISU is a good upcoming barometer for seeing if we have improved on the speed front. They've had more team speed than us for several years. Rhoads has built the team around this since his arrival. We'll see if we match up better this year.

Our chances have been better for years against the power teams that just like to out-muscle their opponents. I would guess we're in the lower half of the BIG in overall team speed. How many times have we had multiple players with big play speed on the offense in the last number of years? How about how often we are capable of playing much man to man on defense for any length of time?

Well, you wrote that people didn't focus on stats at all with Joe Namath so not sure the relevance.

Here are ALL the combined stats for the Spring game and Saturday scrimmage since I haven't posted it yet.

Rudock 26 of 47, 259 yards, 55.4% completion, 5.5 ypa
Sokol 21 of 32, 328 yards, 65.6% completion, 10.3ypa
Beathard 18 of 32, 198 yards, 56.2% completion, 6.2ypa

Rudock was 8 of 18 for 85 yards, 44.4% completion, 4.72 ypa against 1st team only last Saturday. Sokol and Beathard have taken similar snaps against 1st and 2nd team.

2 scrimmages says it all right? Couldn't be that coaches who have forgotten more about football than you know and they still know more have seen enough to make a decision.

In the immortal words of the now retired Allen iverson...you are talking about practice, not a game, practice.

scrimmages are just overhyped practice...and I put my trust in the coaches and I would say the same if Sokol or beathard had gotten the starting nod.

they don't focus on stats with Namath they focus on him saying he would win the Super Bowl...and has been immortalized for it. They focus on that ONE thing like you had focused on ONE stat in two practices. Out of what 20+ spring, fall practices not to mention the times they had with each guy during last season.

.

Well, I think I'm done commenting, but to your point NONE of them have played a game yet and yes practice is just practice.

It will be a shame if ISU ( in a rebuilding year) beats Iowa because they are faster. But it could well happen. KF doesn't have near the number of players from the south as ISU ( I think). A quick look shows all of the offensive skill positions and virtually the entire ISU defense is from the south. I don't think that Iowa is starting a single southern player (excluding Missouri ). Iowa will likely be significantly slower than ISU possibly Western Michigan and even the majority of the Bigten teams.
I dont know much about the ISU QB. If he's really mobile, that could be a problem for Iowa.

Finally, so give rudock a chance. If he struggles I will be there with people wanting him pulled...but for now he has earned his shot according to coaches and that is good enough for me until he proves them wrong.
