Big 10 refs paid or voluntary?

Not usually concerned with officiating. But last night was not good. Something needs to change with officiating in our conference. Way too physical. It makes for a very unappealing product to watch.

The fact is the youth simply isn't getting into officiating like they had in the past and it's finally catching up with the game. IMO the numbers of individuals doing it have gone down, there for the number of quality of officials in that selection pool has also gone down. With it goes the quality of the officiating and it'll only get worse. I think this is a trend that is going on in all sports at this time at all levels.

Don't know the exact number but hasn't there been 4-5 teams in the Big this year that haven't shot a free throw in a game. Hope the let them play style of the Big 10 doesn't hurt the teams in the NCAA tourney as it has in years past.

Is it OK to complain about the refs when we win and shoot 23 more FT's than the other team?

Hope so because that was awful. Consistantly awful both ways.

Basabe T'd up for that dunk? Holy crap.

They were definitely bad. I suppose it has to do with where Iowa and PSU are in the standings...got the bottom of the barrel refs.

Agree, people who think complaining about the reffs is an excuse need to open their eyes.

The officiating in this conference is a joke. It has nothing to do with whether Iowa wins or not.

There was probably 50+ missed or incorrect calls in that game going both ways. Its absolutely pathetic.

The dunk he got hammered on, should have been and 1. Same with Dev's dunk!

There almost bottom of the barrel anymore. We're just typically seeing the ones that are being scraped off the bottom that should have been dealt with a long time ago but no one got around to it. I kind of think of them like Milton from Office Space anymore, you know the refs that are no longer employed (in this case shouldn't be) but simply won't go away. The difference is Milton provided entertainment. Lets just give them the stapler back and let them disappear.

I don't think it is too physical, I think that officiating is way too inconsistent from game to game. I watch every Iowa game and if you look at guy one game and you get called. Then last night it was a fist fight. I don't think either team got an edge from the refs last night but I think both sides were getting smacked around at times.

It's the inconsistency that kills me. Both from game to game and in game officiating is horrible. What was a foul in the 5th minute of the 1st half is magically not a foul with 5 minutes left in the game.

But Basketball refs are the worst, premature whistles, late whistles, charging/blocking, illegal screens are all things that officials can't figure out. I've hated refs and have been verbally abusing refs since I was an U-8 soccer player and there is no argument that will ever get me to respect officials. If you want your child to have no respect for officials just have them play soccer.

CUN3, the reason that most officials/refs become who they are is because they don't have the talent or skill to play the sport. So then they take it out on players who do have the talent and skill to play.

Now with that said, I don't have the talent or skill to play or officiate anything.

I think they get at least a $1000 a game plus flights and a hotel.

I cant remember a buddy of mine did some games for Minnesota, South Carolina and Texas AM a few years ago.

If .01% of the people who complain about the officiating would actually do something about and start officiating, then maybe there would be better officials out there. It's not nearly as easy as people would like to think it is, plus get to have people yelling at you, calling you names, berating you in general for an entire game. Then, if you ever get on a message board you get to read people saying the same things. Sounds like quite a bit fun. I can't believe people are lining up to become an official.

While watching my daughter's games I have often thought about becoming an official because some of them are just poor. The issue is if I did become an official then I would miss her games. So I choose to deal with the bad officiating so I can watch her play.

Also have your kids play soccer if you want them to be gay.

Disclaimer: that's a soccer joke not a gay joke.
