BIG 10 icons -=

Tough question. I will however say that without thinking, when I first read this question, Hayden Fry came to mind right away.

My first thought was Woody Hayes.

No love for JoePa? Either Paterno or Hayes/Schembechler (can't have one without the other, IMO) for Big Ten, though there are some players who deserve serious consideration (Kinnick, Red Grange, Archie Griffin spring to mind).

For Iowa, Hayden, Gable, and Kinnick are the top choices, though I wouldn't say no to Chuck Long and Brands (both as a coach and a wrestler) getting a mention in there, as well as Tim Dwight.

Kinnick never played in the Big 10. Gable would be a great Iowan, even though he wrestled for Iowa State. Hayden would be a good one as well, look how much he has impacted the college coaching landscape. For the Big Ten I would say Woody Hayes..... or Ron Zook

Joe Pa has only been in the Big Ten for less than 20 years. His biggest successes were as an Independent. However, he is and always will be that face of Penn State.

I have to say I have never understood the still obsessive love Tim Dwight still gets. Iowa had all that talent those years and could never step up in big games. Hayden had lost his magic by then. It's a shame.

That doesn't mean he wasn't a great player. It must be something about the fact that he was a 5'6'' white wide receiver who could flat out fly, and happened to be from Iowa City. Just saying :)

Yes Kinnick played in the Big Ten. Iowa joined the Big Ten in 1899.

At the start of each Big 10 game it's Kinnick's face on the heads side of the coin flip, so yeah Nile should get legitimate consideration

I would put Sedrick Shaw ahead of him.

Well, whether or not you think Tim Dwight was a great football player might depend on when you went to high school and what high school you attended. If you attended West High school between 1988 and 1992 you might be more inclinded to think of Tim Dwight as an agent of satan rather than a great football player.

TD was a great hawkeye but I still grind my teeth a little everytime I hear or see his name.
