It appears some of the areas of concern going in to this season have been solved or at least improved to the point things are looking good ...

1) OL Play ... Only allowed 4 sacks in 3 games ... not bad for a young group. Pitt's DL was very good and they were blitzing constantly. We are also averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

2) Kicking game ... Kidd is averaging 49.8 yards per punt ... much improved. Koehn is 4-4 on FGs and all beyond 40 yards.

3) DL Play ... not as many concerns here going in to the season but they did have some holes to fill. They are allowing only 1.9 yards per rush and 51 yards per game.

4) QB Play ... CJ is the man.

Would agree we have improved in all phases, that needed improvement.. CJ is a solid QB if we had not made the change, I feel like we would be 1-2 right now, instead of 3-0..

I was thinking about making the same post last night regarding #1 and #2.

Yes, last night's performance has flipped my expectations for the kicking game.

That said I really don't like the "Max Protection" punt formation now even less than when it made it's debut a couple weeks ago. The three static blockers are at huge mechanical disadvantage when compared to the rushers. Get a very, and I mean VERY, dynamic group like Pitt's and they have no where to go but back into the punter.

Must give credit to Dillon Kidd. His punting was incredible last night. He nearly got the guy returning the blocked punt w/ an ankle tackle which showed great situational awareness and a "never say die" attitude.

Questions - I see Koehn has a stat for punting but I missed it. Was that Koehn on the rolling punt? Was that a designed option/punt?

Yes, that was Koehn on the rugby style punt in the 1Q. 64 yards and inside the 10 ... a thing of beauty. We might see more of that this year ... especially against the wind.

Someone got a little too drunk last night. I didn't even notice that.

Agree on 2/3.

OL is better than expected. That being said, CJ took way to many shots last night. Wisky will be the true indication.

Iowa is 4th in fewest rushing yards allowed, 4th in punting yards, and 6th in net punting yards in the FBS. This is a formula for success.

Don't feel bad ... I'm not sure the broadcast crew did either and they were getting paid for that. They did a great job telling us everyone's age though.

Pretty sure you are right. That means their spotters missed it and they just kept rambling and talking thru the punt.

2 weeks will be a clear indicator

UW will be a MAJOR step up and the 1st real big test in 2015

Honestly, Wisky isnt any bigger of a test than Pitt, which was a big, big test. Iowa will be very difficult for Wisky to beat, and they'll have to play better than they have to date this year to beat Iowa. Of course thAt assumes the Hawks play as scrapy and sound as they have for most of the year so far.

Almost everything in football is debatable. This one truly isn't. Jake doesn't have the tools to make the plays that saved the ISU and Pitt games.

Agreed we are 1-2 without CJ at QB. The OL sack stat is also a testament to CJ as he has quick release, feels pressure and can allude oncoming rushers

While Pitt was a big test, Wisky will be a bigger test. Playing on the road at the program which has usurped Iowa's position in the B1G. A trophy game that includes the trophy which has been absent from our case the longest.

I would consider the o-line play a C+ or B- this year. That isn't great, but I was expecting a F going in, so I'm happy. Although I really think James Daniels is really playing above his head as a freshman getting reps. He could end up being scherff levels in a couple years.

I will agree. The O-line did a fantastic job last night for the most part considering all sorts of blitz they encountered. I think they allowed what, 1 sack? Give props to special teams. Punting, FG's and return team. KF teams of the past that were great had great special teams play. Well done.

Last night we overcame 2 MASSIVE mistakes (block punt led to their TD and CJ's interception led to another Pitt TD) and still won the game. A very positive sign. If we can stay away from critical injuries and huge turnovers, this could be a great season
